Guns have many meanings and uses for many different people. I was fortunate enough to meet up with my good friend Fermin Garza a month or so ago. Upon meeting him for the first time, he presented me with a beautiful Marlin 1894 Limited, chambered for the time honored .32-20. The gun sports a gorgeous piece of walnut with an inlaid medallion.
Last year, Fermin reached 2 milestones, which I wanted to acknowledge somehow. First, Fermin turned 50 years old, and secondly, he was finishing up 30 years in Law Enforcement , where he is still gainfully employed in Corpus Christi, TX. Being in Law Enforcement myself for 26 years, I know how tough and trying it is to last that long. I had an older Ruger Super Blackhawk which was bought new by me several years ago, was extremely accurate, but shot little by me. I thought this would be the perfect gun to help Fermin celebrate his major milestones. I asked for the name of his local gunshop, and the gun was shipped there. Fermin has christened it “Hoovers Hammer” and has since taken a pile of wild hogs with it.
Not to be outdone, Fermin felt he had to present me with something special. Telling him it wasn’t necessary fell upon his deaf ears. He told me his Father always told him to give back more than he received, and Fermin follows this advice religiously. I really wasn’t looking for anything in return, just wanted to acknowledge a friends milestones. He reciprocates. These are gift guns ! Given as tokens of friendship, respect, or rewards for a job well done, they are cherished pieces that have more meaning than the gun themselves. Inherited guns from family members, or guns passed down from generation to generation would also fall into this category. Holding that special gun that great Grandpap killed that trophy deer or bear with holds special meaning that a lot of people would not understand or “get it.” Gun people would, and do “get it.”
This gun has some beautifull wood on it !
It's a shooter, too ! 6 grs. of AA #5 under a Lyman homecast 31108 at 50 yds, off-hand. This is a fireform load. Once the brass is neck sized only, 13-14 grs of H110 or 10-12 grs. of 2400 will get the nod.
Fermin, thanks for the friendship ! You are a unique man ! Complex as a rubix cube, simple as a glass of water, but always a heart of gold, and a deep desire to do what is right ! Until we meet again, pardner........
