Gun Safe Question

Wasn't sure where to put this, but is it ok to put a safe in a garage? No room in my house for the one I need...Do I need a dehumidifier if I put it out there? I live in AR, and it's always humid here.

I don't know. I don't live there. :lol: Is there a lot of crime? If you decide on the garage then lag bolt it into the concrete floor and get an alarm system put in as I guarantee you there are people who will back up to a building in a large truck, break down the door & throw a huge log chain around the safe and drag it out of the garage & load it up. Heard of that several times through the years on the Internet. And be sure & get some extra insurance as homeowner's won't cut it.

P.S. When you have a safe with guns it's best not to tell ANYONE as a buddy may one day in passing say something around his sister's crack addict boyfriend and...............you get the picture. :wink:

IMO, yes.
You need a system for moisture control INDOORS or OUT. I had my large tall gun safe in the unheated shop for a year are better. Installed a gaskit in the door jamb to help with the problem. But in the end had it moved into the gun room. Out side of rust, I thought about wood movement also. Just feel better about it being inside.

The movers by the way dropped the safe while at the front door step. Fellow was pinned under it for a few sec. No visable damage to the safe but how the guy was not harmed I'll never know. :shock:

I have heard suggestions on safes and garages and not bolting it down directly to the concrete. Use some sort of seperator like thin hardwood blocks or heavy strips of rubber. It is suppose to help with condensation inside the safe. No first hand knowledge with this though...

I wouldn't put one in the garage in AR.
Summers are way too humid.

People driving by can see it in the garage and a pickup backed up to it, tip over in the back of truck...drive away...total time WAY under 1 minute...

I wouldn't recommend putting your safe in the garage. Along with the issue of thieves having easier access to your safe. You aren't able to defend your firearms, just by having yourself or dog in the home.

I would also check with your insurance company and make sure if you do place the safe in the garage that your firearms are covered. Bad enough to lose your firearms, but even worse to not get them replaced.

I have one in my garage. Not the preferred option, but safe was too big to get in to the house. Safe weighs in at 950lbs but is secured to the concrete floor.

I live in Colorado, where humidity isn't an issue but I still use desiccant in the safe. My choice is rice inside of socks and works well in CO's high desert.

If I lived in OK with my in-laws, I'd have bought a smaller safe to keep the guns inside and stored inside of gun socks.

Mine is in my garage. I didn't have room in the house either. It isn't bolted down, but it weighs 2340lbs empty (Graffunder B7248). I live in Wa state and I haven't had any problems with humidity or rusting in the 5 years Ive had it.

If you put it in the garage, definitely bolt it down and definitely use a dehumidifier like a Golden Rod. Then again, I'd recommend both those things even if it was inside. My biggest concern would be that you are placing your safe outside the protection of your alarm system (assuming you have an alarm and it is setup the way most are) and that when your garage is open, people driving by can see you have a safe. You can get around both these things. Try placing other stuff strategically in your garage to make it harder to see from the road. Maybe put it on a side wall and place a stand up freezer next to it on the side closer to the door. Also, see if your alarm system can be added to the garage with either a sensor on the door or maybe a motion detector in there.

You want to keep your guns stored at room temperature is your Garage heated? stock wood and metal don't like cold.
I would build a encloseure around it so it's not easily seen with a door that swings out so it can't be kicked in.
Remember it makes it very easy to load and haul it off in the garage, even if it's bolted down a chain on a pickup can easily rip it loose and a couple of guys could stick it in the back of the truck real fast and be gone.
