Least any of you be thinking about using less Styrofoam (going green?)
I ran across something at Sam's Club yesterday that WORKS!

They have Stainless Steel mugs (drink cups) that are the same size,
shape and capacity as the Styrofoam cups at Sam's. I was looking for
something that would keep the drinks COLD, and not crush easily.
The ones there are the store brand (made in China) and are a whole
lot heavier than I thought they would be. I made up a "Coke" (two cans
of the commercial product) with four ice cubes as a test to see if they
would be worth keeping. - - - AMAZED ME! - - - When I finished the
beverage, eight hours later, there was still ice in the cup!

Made a second one with two ice cubes and one can of beverage, and
there was still ice in it as I got up this morning! THAT'S what I wanted!
(Disclaimer: the beverage was out of the ice box, so they started cold)

Not cheap at $10/ea (sold in pairs), but for something that keeps drinks
. . cold . . and uses less ice to do that, I'm happy. 8)
(less ice means more beverage in a give volume) .

(actually just using something that does a better job for what I want)

One of the current crazes is the Yeti coolers & tumblers. And of course,,, there are different brands of a similar product. But I too like it when a drink actually stays cold for longer periods as well. My only problem is the size of the cups/tumblers. During the summer,,, I drink a lot of fluids, and I'm not always at a place I can refill my cup.
But you say you had one that took 2 cans of coke huh? That's 24 ozs plus the 4 ice cubes. Interesting.

Walmart has similar mugs in the sporting goods area. The brand is Ozark Trail. I bought the 30 oz mug with lid, $9.99. They have the Yeti people all up in arms and trying to sue. Nice mugs.

I have an RTIC. Friend has a Yeti. Mine will keep ice longer than his and mine was less than half price than the Yeti.

I have a couple Yeti tumblers I bought over Christmas. Not a single complaint. Fantastic product and worth the price. The RTIC ones are the same design at a cheaper price and well reported terrible QC and CS. I likely would never buy a Yeti cooler as I have no need for one, however as they say, you pay for what you get. My 20 ounce was only $30. Heck that's sales tax on a new gun...

I've had a drink going all day and it was not a fluke.
COLD drinks all day. 8)

My new quest is for a "grip" for it. Something that will make it easier
to hold on to as you move about. I guess you could call it a handle.

I took to mine with a vibro-graver to give a somewhat less smooth
surface to hold, and the vibro-graver digs in just enough to be helpful.
I also put my name and Ham radio call on the bottom, in case there
is a question of just who belongs to it[sic].

Wouldn't it be WONDERFUL if this was the most significant item
to be concerned about? 8)

Pat, you could always solder a handle onto it. The best think I can think of using would be a drawer pull. The only problem I see with a handle is that it wouldn't fit in the cupholder in my truck or on my tractor. I have a Yeti Judy bought for me a couple of years ago and it looks brand new and the insulation properties have not diminished at all.

I also looked at current Yeti prices, spec's, etc.
I got two of the Sam's Club units (also available at Wall World),
for what you would pay for one yeti (best yeti prices I could find).

Except for the name, everything else looks the same. :wink:

Yup, I got one of those stainless 30 oz. cups from walley world. It's heavier than the Yeti cup , but it works great.
It keeps cold stuff cold and hot stuff hot...How does it know? :roll:

I have a Yeti cup and even though I use it often (kind of feel like I need to since I bought it here and has a Ruger logo on it).... I really don't like it for cold drinks... the problem is just as folks have mentioned... the ice does not melt. I don't like that.... I like to have some weak drink from the melted ice a few minutes after drinking all the good stuff....

A blonde bought one because she heard it keeps hot stuff hot and cold stuff cold so she put chicken soup and a popsicle in it.

My son has one of the Ozark Trail mugs and he says it works well...in a steel mill.

try the drawer pull idea with some J-B Weld Epoxy.

The epoxy doesn't require modifying the surface of the steel and also,
since this is a sealed, two layer unit, I'm hesitant about applying that
much heat to it. The epoxy sets in four hours and is cured in 24 hours.
They advertise the strength after curing at something over 3K psi.
If that isn't strong enough to hold a drink, I'll give up.

Tyrone, I don't know of any brick and mortar stores that sell them. I do know Amazon does, plus they sell the handles, different lids, etc.. Walmart sells the other off brand of Yeti. Ozark Trails, the reviews are pretty much the same as for RTIC.

Sam's Club has them and Wally World has them.

I'm about to finish one drink I did up about fourteen hours ago.
Ice is gone, but still cold. I'm a happy camper! 8)

let it sit for the full twenty-four hours advertised cure time. After that I've
pushed, pulled and twisted on it and it seems their (J-B Weld) stated
strength is valid. Can't get it to do anything but hold.

Going to do the second one today.

Well, I went to 2 local wally worlds,, and did not find any of the RTIC ones. I did pick up one of the Ozark Trails one for $10.00. After I washed it, and let it dry, I filled it with 1/3 ice & 1/3 water. It sat untouched in my house, for 9-1/2 hours before the ice was melted.
Not bad!

That's awesome Pat. Sometimes you just have to innovate. Nice. I like that much better then the ones you see for sale on the web. Great minds can come together and create a solution.

Just an update:

As pictured, it fits in the cup holder in the car with zero interference.

I stopped off at Sam's at about 1pm today and filled it up as I bought a
few other things. Here it is at 10:30pm and there is still ice in it.

Somehow, at $10 for the mug, $2.75 for the drawer pull and a little
JB Weld I am very happy with the way it works. Especially when the
Yeti is $40 for just the mug. 8)

I also found that if you use a rat-tail file in the opening, a standard
plastic straw fits much better (isn't partially crushed).

I have the Ozark trail version (30 oz.) sold by Walmart that will keep things cold so well that when I did my experiment of filling it with ice and letting stand for 17 hours, I was only able to pour out about a tablespoon of melted water. About $10 and worth it. TD
