I'm no fan of Grant but the fact is if he was a drunk both sides would have liked to have more drunks like Grant.

I have two rules concerning heading out into the woods "loaded for bear":hittman said:
1. In California black bear habitat - I am comfortable with whatever caliber I'm carrying, from 7mm magnum down to .38+p and anything in between.
2. In grizzly or polar bear habitat - I stay the hell out of their habitat!!! :shock:

Good point about grizzly and polar bears. If you look at the evolution of bears, and this BTW is way off topic, the grizzly/brown bear is a close descendant of the polar bear. And yes, grizzly and brown bears are the same species, different sub-species. Grzzly's have more aggression because they evolved from polar bears in open area and had to fight to survive. The black bear evolved in forests and could run and hide in cover so they are less aggressive. Note climbing a tree in either case is futile. If the bear wants to eat you, it will. Black bears will climb the tree to eat you, Grizzly's will shake you out of it!

The reality is that, at the ages of a lot of us, Mrs. Howell is more our speed.
Hmmm...I had forgotten about Mrs. Howell...
Wait, what were we talking about? Oh yeah, the Grant program on History channel. I have watched the first two and so far, they are ok. Not great, not bad. However watching a two hour program with probably an hour of that time in commercials, is torture. I will record the third one and fast forward through the ads.

I realize that views on the second amendment are strong here and that this may not be a popular position to take but when it comes to the issue of the best handgun for bears I am going on record to state that I believe that no bear has any business with a handgun of any caliber.

I think the general I despised the most was Custer. I believed all the lies about what he was like. Then one day my wife gave me a book by an author that did his own research rather than reading someone else's research and writing a book from that material. It painted a totally different picture of him. Since that time I have read more books done from original research and they were in agreement with the first book my wife had given me. Then I got one composed of the stories he wrote for Harper's magazine. Those stories dispelled all the myth's of him having a big ego. He told stories on himself that were both funny and to most, embarrassing. No one with a big ego would have told stories like that about themselves. I believe he was attacked in the press after he was dead and could not defend himself. His wife tried to counter the lies, but the power of the press and rich people won in the end. Today, I still see references to him as if those stories are true. If the truth were really known, he would be held in the same esteem as other heroes. I am a Confederate through and through, but I believe Custer will someday emerge as a brave honorable man if history is ever recorded as fact rather than the fiction it has been allowed to become.
