Sherman had hundreds of black following him through the swamps of Georgia on his "march to the sea". They were depending on him to feed them because the Union had burned and destroyed all of their homes and crops along with the whites. Sherman despised them and burned a bridge so they were left in the swamp to die and he would not have to fool with them.
