GP100 old vs new grips question.

Will the current GP100, with Hogue contoured grips, accept the old style grips with the insert panels? No modification to gun or grips and they fit as originals did?

Yes, the change in grips was caused by the subcontractor that made the old ones going out of business. Last time I looked, Brownells had complete kits with the grip, inserts, frame crosspin and screw.

Thanks. When I look at the parts list for the newer guns, it seems like there is some little extra adapter on the bottom of the grip frame to accept a screw. These parts would not be used to retro fit the older grips, correct?

A grip locator pin is needed for the wood insert grips, it fits in the hole at the bottom of the grip frame stud to hold the rubber grip in place.

A spring steel stirrup through the hole in the grip frame stud is used to hold the Hogue grips on with a screw in the botton of the grip.

Almost. The Hogue uses a different part which serves a different function. It provides a mounting point for the little "stirrup" that fits on the grip stud and gives the single Hogue mounting screw a place to screw into.

With the standard old-style grip the locator pin actually helps hold the rubber part of the grip in place. I found that without this part, the grips have a weird, squishy, "hollow" feel. The pin really holds them snugly in place, and is the part that does the work; The grip screw does very little to hold the grips on.

Yes, the old style grip will fit new GP100s (as well as Super Redhawks and Alaskans).

Brownells and Midway should still offer them, and of course you can get them from Ruger.

Here's something to consider besides comparing the looks of the grips. If you have a 6" GP100, you have a lot of weight out there in the front. The Hogue grips make that extra barrel weight a bit easier to deal with, especially for off-hand shooting.
