GP100 - 5" barrel vs. 4"

I am interested to hear from users who have shot GP100's in both 4" and 5" barrel configurations.

I have a 4" model and like it very much, but wonder if I might shoot even better with a longer barrel.

I suspect the 6" may get a little heavy for offhand shooting and wondered if the 5" might be a good compromise.

I have the 5" model, and like it. The 5" is a special run, so if you want something a little different (like I did) that's a consideration. I also happen to like 5" guns.

Honestly I don't think 1" of sight plane difference is going to be that huge of a deal. I believe this is one of those things that people make a big deal of, but when it gets down to 3/4" to 1" differences I have a hard time getting worked up about it.

I do like the slightly nose-heavy balance of the 5" gun. The 4" is pretty neutral to my hands.

Thank you for your reply. Your gun looks great with those grips.

The 5" model may not happen for me since I live in California and it is not on the state "Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale". If I am patient I may be able to find a used one a LEO or someone else who brought it here from another state is selling though.

One way or the other, I see another GP100 in my future!
 
You understand that there are the limited run of five hundred units and the current production five inch barrel guns. My suggestion to you is to know the difference between the two. I will the details a mystery for you.They may be more important than you expect. Even if you lived in a free State you would need to have a decent down payment or five-hundred plus in cash to walk away.

There striking differences that would impact resale price. Case in point there were only five hundred in the first Lipsey run. Another is finish on the new guns. A third is the guns engineering on the new guns. This is my last post on this thread. Calthrop

5" barrels are my favorite length on N-framed S&Ws but I probably shouldn't bring them up on the RugerForum (LOL)...except to say there is a 5" GP-100 for sale on the S&W Forum for anyone looking for one.

I did not try a 4" but I did shoot a 6".
My 5" is a little lighter and it is very accurate and being different is always nice...

I got one from this forum and couldnt be happier. Changed out the houges with stock grips, rides well on the hip. Had a 6" before and sold it, just too front heavy, the 4, a little to much the other way, the 5" really balances well for me and has really become the do all gun, woods, range, home defense.
 
Jwc - have you handled or shot a 6"? I love mine and it's a pleasure to shoot.

I could not find a 6" GP100 to borrow or rent, but I did take a look at one at a local store.

I came across a new in box 6" model, blued for $380 and could not pass up that deal so I bought it even though I would have preferred stainless.

I have not shot it yet since I have several days left on my 10 day waiting period...
 
Congrats, that is a good price, Your question was originoly about a diff. from 4 to 5" , or 4 to 6", I assure you that you would see a big difference in sighting from a 4 to 6" but only going from 4 to 5" you would probably not notice that much.

The new GPs are made without pins in the extractor. Some hold that these pins were for strength and that Ruger somehow 'cheapened' the GP100, but in reality they assist in the removal of the nut, not alignment. Now they are made like S&W, with two of the 'star's' arms oriented for alignment.

I pick up the gun Wednesday but am already having a bit of buyers remorse since it is blued and not stainless.

Stainless guns are very easy to maintain. I am probably being paranoid about owning a blued GP100. I am sure it will function the same, but I am concerned it may be more difficult to clean without scratching etc...
 
I had a blued gp 100 for many years. Don't need to clean but every 200 or so rounds. A good wipe down with an oil impregnated cloth periodically and you'll be good to go. I used mine hunting in all kinds of weather. No rust.

Against my better judgment, I got impatient and took the gun straight from the dealer to the range today without even cleaning it.

The sights were right on from the factory and the difference between shooting my 4" GP100 and the new 6" GP100 was remarkable. I like the 4" very much, but the 6" shoots even better for me.

I am keeping the 6", even if it is not stainless!!! Double action groups were not much worse...
