GP in 38 special question

I have a GP 100 that is 38 special only..not 357 mag...it is a GPF831 series with a 3" barrel....several folks have told me it's a Security six but it isn't...it's a GP that was made for certain customers where a 357 was not authorized for use (some security forces and I think some export)...It has a smaller frame than the standard GP100 in 357 and has the wood insert grips....I would like to look into replacing the grips with something different...does anyone know who might make a grip to fit? Would a Security six or a speed six grip possibly fit? Appreciate any help.

I've got a 3" blued GP myself.

Any GP grips will work. Hogue, Pach, etc. Maybe a Google search under "images" will give you some ideas.

No, the "Six series" grips will not fit. Six series has the 2 individual grip panels while the GP is the "stem" some call it. Take those grips off and you'll see what I mean.

Oh yeah, I think Super Redhawk grips fit too.

All the GPs have the same frame. Yours probably has a more tapered barrel that makes it look smaller.

Super Redhawks also have the same post for the grip frame, and the grip is the same.

Your cylinder is the same length as other GPs and you could have a .357 Mag cylinder fitted or have yours reamed for .357 Mag.

As said before, any GP grips and Super Redhawk grips will fit.
There is a market for the compact GP grips that you have on it but....the gun is over towards 'rare' and has some collector value, so I would hang on to any original parts if you replace the grips and/or cyl (with a 357 mag cyl.).
(I'd love to have it in my GP-100 collection )

I thought all GP's and Super Redhawks were the same grip frame. (??)

The 38 I wrote about is a way smaller revolver than my GP100 in 357... I doubt the bigger grips would fit.... i'll check

A GP100 is a GP100. They are all the same size frame. The Compacts are only in the grip, the 'shank' is the same size.

Yes, the larger, adj. sight GP-100 grips will fit the fixed sight GP-100s. Actually, I went the other way and put the compact grip on my Half Lug 6" because I have small hands. Works for me.
Same with the new Hogue grips.

Hitman, I don't know that they are different, just always assumed that the tang on the fixed site, short grip guns was shorter than the adj site guns with a long grip.

If you are talking about my original post and that gun not being a GP-100....it's roll marked GP100 and the "sub model" is a GP F831....it's a GP all right and not an SP101....got one of those too....different critter...Google GPF831 and it's got lots of info on the gun..

I laid it out beside my SS GP100 357 and viola....the size difference is an optical illusion..they are the same size frame, cylinder, etc...the grip is the difference....could have fooled me until I really laid them out together.....love the way the compact grips shoot.

I'm looking at a SS GP100 4inch barrel fixed sight in 38 Spl. at this time..priced at 425.00...excellent + condition.... Does this seem like a fair price ???

Its a bit high considering its used and only .38 Special freaks like me and Stantheman covet them. I would offer $350.00 and pretend that the .38 chambering is a huge turn off but you still like the gun.

Again, I think when the final production numbers become available, the 38 spl will be over on the low production / 'rare' side of things.

If you are looking just for the insert, there is a fellow on ebay (1chig) I believe his name is does some fine work, bought several different inserts from him, great stuff and affordable. Idf you cant seem to find him drop me and email and I will get his address from my records
