Hey eveyrone, my dad owns a gp100 and we are planning to go some blm land and shoot for a little bit. I have heard that you can use .38special rounds in a .357 mag, is this true? If so what round do you guys recommend? Will the .38 damage the internals or structure of the gun in any way? Ammo is freaking expensive out here so if we are just gonna target shoot, we want to try and keep down the cost. Thanks for all your comments.

You shouldn't have any problems with any brand of the 38spl. There are economy loads that work fine and I'd suggest the bulk Winchester "white box" 100 round box. They are about the cheapest I've found for just plinking. The 357 is just a longer more powerful 38spl so everything else is the same. You may have to spend a bit more time cleaning the crud ring that builds up in the cylinder, but no harm will come to your gun.

You can but be aware there has been an ammo shortage for the past year or so and a lot of stores sell ammo out as fast as they get it in, so you may want to call them before going and ask if they have any. 38 special is a very common round though. You may want to try several different brands and see which one gives you the best results in your gun.

I found some hungarian .38 at cabelas for $12.00 per box of 50. Only bought one box to try them out. I was mildly surprised, shot just fine and no more dirty than any other iinexpensive brand I have tried. Most likely when I go back for more they will be out of that brand....

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm not sure if we have a Cabela's out here in so cal, all i know of stores like that are Bass Pro Shop and Turners Outdoorsman. Yea i heard that about some BLM areas. I called ahead for the area we are shooting to make sure we don't get into any trouble, they said it was fine as long as we keep the area well maintained (pick up trash and spent ammo casings, respect the natural landscape, etc). I am planning to surprise my dad for fathers day. Hopefully i will be able to get my hands on ammo before its too late.

yea The shootist is a good store, but their prices are a bit high and their customer service isn't too great IMO. Every time i go there, they don't take me as a serious customer because, from my experience, i am a youngster. So now i go to Faith Armory in Temecula. Great customer service and great prices.
