..because who doesn't love a good gun story?

Took a collegue, a woman, out to the range this week because she wanted to learn to shoot. She is afraid of guns, but wants to overcome that, and is looking for home protection.

She spent a bit of time shooting a Taurus 94 .22 and a Ruger 22/45. She handled both well, became more comfortable with them, but has a bit of recoil anticipation which is causing her to flinch. She'll get past it.

We talked about self defense and she wanted to shoot a round that was an acceptable SD load. I explained at a minimum that would be a .38, and it would be at it's most controllable in a heavier frame.

I loaded up the GP with standard pressure .38 and told her I'd fire it once so she could see and hear the difference. I had forgotten how well it shoots. We were only at 3 yards, but without me even paying much attention it went like a laser to the X.

She took control and her first shot was right on top of mine. I think the ability to do that did wonders for her confidence! She fired the remaining 4 and once she had a feel for it, her recoil anticipation returned and she went low, but she left with some confidence and is eager to return.

I forget sometimes what a great weapon the GP is. Just love this gun!

My cousin was the same way , even though she`s not bought a firearm yet she`s not anti-gun anymore & that`s a start !!!!

She still shoots my GP when she visits !!!

I joined the crowd also. I have a bunch of super pistols and decided I wanted a good plinker so I went and bought a 4" gp100 to shoot mostly 38's in. I love shooting 38's and have several 1000 loaded up with waddcutters wating to go at all times. They make fun guns and are super light in the recoil dept.

Excellent way to introduce new shooters! :D

I also start them out with .22 revolvers and semis and then move up to .38 Special. I haven't found one yet that didn't like the .38 and were pretty good new shooters at 5 or 7 yards.

I was looking for a GP-100 (or perhaps a Smith 686) when I bought my Anniversary Blackhawk a few years back.

I'm still looking for a good DA .357 to fill that hole in my personal collection...and I've pretty much decided it will be a GP. The 686 is nice...but I don't think the extra $200-$250 is worth it just to get one more hole in the cylinder and a ugly "zit" on the side.

;)

JimB120, that's a great looking GP. I had one - stupid for letting my son have it. Now I need another, and I'd like it to be like yours!
Good story.

At least it's still in the family Jimbo. You'll have to pry this one.... actually I told my family to bury me with it!

Nice watch.. nice grips.. nice story... nice Ruger.

FYI, The remington golden sabres and the Corbon "thunder ranch" DPX rounds are pretty light .357 loads, at least compared to say Speer gold dots, which are hot and heavy.

Anyways, when you are done next time you teach her to clean it while you make her dinner :D

That is a purty gun! Where did you get those grips? What type of wood are they?

Thanks!

JimB120,
Good job! I am a certified instructor and much prefer working with the ladies too. P.S. I like those grips too!

wixedmords,
I agree with you. Now if each of us would bring a new shooter in to the sport wouldn't that be fantastic.

jimbo1096,
My oldest boy borrowed one of mine two years ago......I don't think it's coming back anytime soon either (LOL). I guess I'll have to go get a replacement.

I do really like the 327 I have been shooting and I am certainly not telling you fellows anything new when I say, it's just an all around great gun. GLH

Tony I don't teach 'em to clean one until they get their own... (it's fun to clean your gun). Otherwise she might change her mind! :)

Thanks for the comments everyone.. and for those looking for the grips.

They are Hogues.

The wood is Goncalo Alves... I really liked the light wood on the SS.

They also are very comfortable to shoot with. I was afraid they wouldn't be.. especially the .357, but just seem to fit my hand so well they control well.

A variety of woods and colors available though.
