I was wondering if the old style rubber/wood GP-100 compact grips that used to be standard on the fixed sight models will fit on any GP-100? I would like to put them on a 6" model if I could find some.

Seems like I read that those grips would fit any GP-100, although I'm not certain of that.

The compact Lett grip will fit an adjustable sight GP100, I have a set on this 6" full lug right now and it's surprisingly well balanced.
And vice versa, several of my fixed sight GP100's have Large Lett grips. All GP100's have the same grip peg. If you wanted to, you could put compact Lett's on a Super Redhawk since it shares the same grip peg as the GP100.
FYI, since it's easy to find NOS compact grip bodies but Lett panels are pretty much unobtainable, Altamont makes nice wood inserts for the compact and large Letts. SP101 plastic panels will also fit in the compact grip bodies.

L-frame, I just bought the compact grips from Midwayusa. They sell the genuine Ruger oem part. Also, original black plastic inserts are still available from Ruger and third party. Note that the Ruger mounting hardware is quite rugged. The Altamonts look nice but use a flimsy mounting system to secure the panels.

I'm glad that you posted that. I haven't seen any SP101 Altamont inserts first hand yet and I'm using the GP100 compacts on my 454 Alaskan so I need something nice and sturdy. I'll just hold out until my stag inserts arrive then.wolfee said:

I'm not at home right now but I will post the Mediums and Compacts side by side. The Altamonts do kind of use a flimsy mount, I am thinking of trying a set of PA Hickory panels from the 41Magnum guy over on the other Ruger forum. Nice, solid compact size panels are hard to find, and I love the look of wood inserts. If I could find Medium grip bodies I'd buy a bunch of them!
I bought about 10 of the compact grip bodies from Midway last summer so I should be set for any GP's I buy in the future! I wish I could find different sources for inserts though.
For just range shooting or concealed carry the Altamonts should be fine, I wouldn't use them on a daily holster carried gun or a duty gun. As soon as I get my new .22 SP101, I plan to use the plain Altamont panels in those grips, since I'm not a fan of the laser burned grip panels that come with them, that are also Altamonts.

Here's my other 6" GP100 that I have compact Letts on. It was a private purchase LEO gun that came with large Letts, but I had a beat up set of compacts that I put on it, and they look perfect. I use this gun for winter CC once in a while :)
MountainWilliam, I should clarify my comment about the "flimsy" Altamont hardware. First of all, the panels fit so perfectly into the grip that they probably don't even need a screw to hold them. But, the problem with their hardware is that they use a simplified system with one screw and no seperate ferrules. The ferrules are embedded in the panels and the screw going in holds OK where the screw head contacts the panel. On the other side where the screw goes in there is only enough thickness in the brass fitting for about 2 turns of threads. And it seems to be soft brass. I just barely snugged the screw in until the panels were not moveable and no more. So far, so good, but my gun is a 38 special only and it doesn't get the battering that heavy magnums would do.

Check Brownells and Midway for the old style grips. Sometimes they have the wood inserts as well. Altamont also has inserts. If you get the compact grips (designed for the fixed sight 3" GP100) get the SP101 sized inserts.

I've never heard of a "medium" GP100 grip before; are you absolutely certain that what you're showing isn't just the "compact" grip with the OEM Xenoy insert that Ruger originally catalogued at least some of the fixed-sight models with?

No, it is in fact a Medium grip. It is thicker from front to back than the compact, and also a bit longer. You can see there's more rubber around the insert than the compact in the pic. As soon as I can, I will post them side by side.
On GB right now there's a GPNY with compact wood inserts , and it also has the "medium" sized grip. It seems only the GPNY's had this grip.

Midway has the compact Lett style rubber grips in stock for $8.29 minus the panels, locator and screw. They also sell the grip locator for a little over $2. There is a fellow on eBay that makes the panels for either the large or small Lett. Check out his panels. His seller name is 1chig and they won't cost you an arm and leg.

This is absolutely the first mention I have ever heard of a "medium" GP-100 grip. If possible I would like to see a picture of the small, medium and large grips together.
I've always thought that barrel length should have been the criteria for which grip. Not the sights. The 3" need a short, the 6" need a long grip. My 4" fs makes me crazy, I can't decide if the short or long look better. For plinking at the range I usually keep the long grips on becasue the gun is either laying on the bench or getting it's trigger pulled.

I haven't been at home lately to take pics of all the grips, but I can say for 100% certainty that the grips on my GPNY are in fact "medium" sized. :D
