Got that groundhog yesterday

Solved my groundhog problem with my 10/22. When he came out from under the shed I was waiting. Two rapid Remington yellow jackets delivered from my trusty 10/22 to his right shoulder and he fell over like a steel target. He was close to 10lbs.
Good thing I live in the rural county and can take care of problems without poisons and traps.
Bought this 10/22 a couple of years ago at a local gun shop. It was stainless with a grey coating and 22 inch barrel. The rifle was like new and the previous owner had traded it in because of a jamming problem.
I gave $200 for it. Got it home and removed all the plastic over-mold from the trigger guard assembly. That fixed it. Put a black centerpoint 3X9 on it and what a shooter it is. I prefer it over my CZ and Marlin.
Hey, when the squirrels and rabbits see me exit the house with it in hand, they haul butt for the deep woods.

Funny, my wife came out to look at him and asked, Isn't he like the famous one on TV ?
I told her that this was Mr. Digger. If I hadn't stopped him that there would be a Mrs. Digger followed by a bunch of little Diggers followed by our house falling in. There probably isn't much holding the shed up now.
She said, Honey, I'm glad that you took care of it...

This has been a busy groundhog season for me. I have shot at least six of the critters so far (lost count) and hope I have eliminated the "family" that has been undermining my barn.

Some of 'em are pretty good-sized. Can't help but wonder how they'd taste. All I ever see 'em eat is green stuff, so they shouldn't be too bad.

I've had squirrel and rabbit. My granddad claimed he ate opossum and river turtle. I'd have to be a mighty hungry myself. From what I've read groundhog is kinda like squirrel and safe to eat. Found this article and recipe:

Far as I know they're a lot like squirrel but you want them 2-3yrs old or younger. After that they start getting tough & funky.

Had BBQ groundhog once. Not bad but wouldn't want it very often.

I happen to like the taste of Ground hog , most folks say it is "gamey" ..Guess I like "gamey" meats and "fishy" fish! Have a great recipe for the critters in a sort of stew with a sour cream sauce ...yummy but yes the younger ones are more tender. This past summer we roasted one up on a wooden spit at an 18th Century encampment ( Rev War) Now that was some gamey tasting meat!

One thing I might add ...you got to have a strong stomach when dressing them out. They do have a pungent odor when their clothes come off.
I even used to "Bark Tan" the hides; makes great leather!

I also like eating groundhog. They also have an odor to them when you bake them, but they taste great.

My dogs treed one once. It was the first time I had ever seen one run up a tree so I shot it out. Even though they were coon dogs, I didn't consider it trash running; afterall it treed. I par boiled it for 30 minutes with salt and pepper, and then baked it for about an hour; slathered in barbaque sauce. It was good eaten. My kids ripped into it big as you please but my wife wouldn't even look at it. MMMMM that's good ground hawg daddy. Oh yeah, shot it with my trusty ole Single Six.
