Got a farm and brush gun...

Picked up a good looking Yugo SKS yesterday. Grenade launcher & sight and cleaning kit. I like it, a lot. Going to keep the wood stock. I am thinking about getting a couple of Tapco 20 rnd mags just because and windage adjusable rear sight. I put 70 rounds through it yesterday. Shoots great. I really need to put it to paper, though. Come to think of it, I haven't put my last 3 rifles to paper yet. lol Sounds like a plan when I get a full day off. :D

Good luck w/ the detachable mags. The conversion usually does not work.

I converted mine, then I went back. I just like it better with the smaller original magazine.

I have the Tapco 20 round mags, and will make you a great deal on the two if you want them. They are just sitting on a shelf down in my office, gathering dust.

contrary to what I've read on the internet, I never had a problem with the detachable mags... but I just did not like them... what I did was found some 20 round non-detachable mags and put them on. But these babies are real hard to find now... I think I paid something like $50 for the last one.

Those Yugo SKS are not bad rifles if you can figure out how to get that big old ugly goober off the end of the barrel. :)

Blume, I'm keeping mine... I found some grenades for it. LOL They have claws that a tennis ball can fit into. Originally used to launch hand grenades.

My plan was to switch back and forth between the detachable mags and the original mag depending on mood and what I was going to be doing that day. I still haven't decided because it loads pretty quick with the stripper clips.

dlh, I'll PM you whenever I decide. I'm back at work and it'll be a while before I get to shoot anything.

Dillon's Blue Press- catalog/magazine had a nice article about SKS this month (september)
It mentioned the yugo's don't have chromed barrels, so be diligent in cleaning if you use corrosive ammo. The article also mentioned some of the later rifles have free floating firing pins that can cause slam fires if crud accumulates around the pin enough to make it stick.

coach, I knew about the non-chromed barrel, I clean all my guns after shooting them. A good habit I have been taught all my life. But, I did not know about the firing pin. Not sure how old it is. But, as stated above, I'm not going to worry about it too much. haha I did go put almost 4 boxes of Wolf though it before ever thinking about cleaning it. Fired flawlessly. When I did get home and stripped it down, there was sludge/varnish all over it. I don't think it was the shipping goo, but it looked like someone doused it with both bore cleaner and oil and let it set. Got it all unstickied and looks great, not as many dings and scratches as most that I've seen.

Thanks, Snake. That's the exact reason I got it. The .223 CZ I bought last week is almost to pretty to shoot. lol Had to get something to balance everything out.

Rather than a 20-round mag, you might look for a 5-round. They fit flush with the stock and make carrying the rifle while hunting a lot easier, and 5 rounds is enough for deer hunting. I used a Dremel cut-off wheel to slice a stripper clip in two to make two 5-round clips.

I really don't have a use for just 5 shots in the SKS. My M77 .300 Win Mag is my hunting rifle. For my purpose, making it a 5 rnd would be a few big steps back.

I like the tapco 20's myself. Very well made mags.
You can dremel the sides of your bolt a bit and it will accept
them with the bolt closed.
Then you have a gun better than an AK in my opinion, lighter,
thinner, but shooting a nice decent medium size cartridge.

As far as stocks, I again like thin and light. I have tried the Tapco
extendables, like the T6 but they end up too thick and I don't need rails all around.
So I prefer a straight, thin $50 folder like Hogue has. Cheap and simple.
A few 20 round mags, ditch the grenade launchers and bayonette
crapola and you are in business! :)

I'm keeping the the launcher and bayonet. I found some surplus grenades that can be stuffed with tennis balls. That'll make for some fun times at the farm with the cattle. LOL And, I'm going to sharpen up the bayonet. It might come in handy for what I got the gun for. Plus, how else can I do a bonzai charge at the invading yankees without a bayonet? LOL

I had bought a Yugo SKS, new in the crate and covered in cosmoline, with accy's for $200 flat.
Cleaned it up, and shot it. Nice shooter. Utilitarian gun.

But I finally came to the conclusion it's a lot of length and weight for an assault cartridge. I felt it was very clumsy for the small round it shoots.

Traded it at the next San Antonio gun show for a new in the box Ruger Mk-III in stainless!
