Work afforded me visits to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Finland and Sweden. I was in South Korea, Taiwan and Finland multiple times for extended periods.

If I could ever live somewhere else it would be South Korea. The people are friendly, the scenery is beautiful (even the inner cities are charming) and I love the food.

I spent five tours and multiple TDYs in Korea from the mid 80s through the 90s, along with a couple of trips to Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand. Some of these were for work, some for play, some were going back for play after being there for work. It’s easier to get to say, Australia when you’re already in Korea!
Back to Korea- the Army sent me to school to learn their language so I was treated very well by the people there, even more so as my father fought there for the entirety of the War. I made friends there that I still communicate with occasionally. I was able to observe the ROK go from a nearly third-world country to the beginnings of the manufacturing and economic powerhouse of today. One of these days I’ll go back and take my wife for her first trip to Asia.

There is less and less reason for an American to go to South Asia since so many from there are now here. When my doctor retired several years ago, and I needed to find a new primary care physician, most of the practicing Internists with American sounding names were not taking new patients. I seemed to be limited to those who spoke difficult to understand English, had gone to medical school somewhere outside the U.S., and seemed predominantly from India, Pakistan or the Middle East. Maybe its different in the big cities, but here in my small city (about 150,000) we seem to have a large number of Indians, and a growing Muslim community as well.

Our 6 months living about 25 miles North of Montreal in a log house on about 3 acres along a small river was just outstanding This was in 1971, so son was 3 and daughter was yet to be born. I had a company car and company credit card along with only working 40 hours a week. this allowed weekends off I also had a good per diem rate. This allowed us to travel in Eastern Canada and the New England states which we had never been to.
In the 6 months period we put 20K on the car and probably only 2-3K was work related. We were very lucky to be there for all 4 seasons and left on Dec. 15th.

This assignment was probably the best of my career except for the 2 months I spent with Wifie in Freeport Bahamas and living in a VERY nice hotel. We did a lot of snorkeling, Bone fishing with the 2 locals that worked at the hotel and hanging out at the pool. Oh, yea there was a casino across the street from the hotel. Wifie had a $20 a day allowance to pull the handle on the slots. Some days were good some not so good.

For me, it was Kokomo.

Even as a born californian (ex-pat in self exile since 1970) i cant decide if sf or la was more exotically diverse, but its deafinitely la now.

I never was the world traveler, but I’ve always found it Interesting to hear other people stories. I’ve been to England and really enjoyed it, went to San Miguel in the Philippines and sort of enjoyed it, the beer was good and the ladies accommodating, I’ve been to Hawaii, but never got a chance to actually enjoy it, and the rest of my time was spent somewhere along in the California coast, except for a brief three months in Bremerton, Washington. Here I’ve lived in South Carolina, Texas, Louisiana, and California. No exciting stories to tell about any of them.

On my first trip to Singapore in 1985, I had a stop in Hawaii to change from Delta to Singapore Air which is the best airline I have ever flown on. Anyway, I decided to rent a 300ZX and spend 3 days sightseeing before going to Singapore. I drove around the whole Island of Oahu, went to the Arizona Memorial, Punch Bowl, and had to spend time at the Pink Lady/Royal Hawaiian bar on Waikiki Beach checking out the beach bunnies.
It was a good start to an even gooder time in Singapore and Jakarta.
Oh yea my workie thing was to oversee the Engineering and Design in our Jakarta office of an offshore platform for Arco. Since the facility was going into Indonesian Water the design and construction had to be done in Indonesia.
Good times were had a long time ago. The downside was I had to leave my family at home. Son was 16 and old enough to take care of house and car stuff and Wifie was teaching school Daughter was also a big help. I was gone for 18 months with one trip home at Christmas.

Got there via penn yan, rather than nyc, the worst danger was a very low very old stone bridge; the owner dident like toll roads, and said he'd been on this road a lotta times, but was surprised by the sudden appearance of the old bridge...
