I spent five tours and multiple TDYs in Korea from the mid 80s through the 90s, along with a couple of trips to Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand. Some of these were for work, some for play, some were going back for play after being there for work. It’s easier to get to say, Australia when you’re already in Korea!Work afforded me visits to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Finland and Sweden. I was in South Korea, Taiwan and Finland multiple times for extended periods.
If I could ever live somewhere else it would be South Korea. The people are friendly, the scenery is beautiful (even the inner cities are charming) and I love the food.
Back to Korea- the Army sent me to school to learn their language so I was treated very well by the people there, even more so as my father fought there for the entirety of the War. I made friends there that I still communicate with occasionally. I was able to observe the ROK go from a nearly third-world country to the beginnings of the manufacturing and economic powerhouse of today. One of these days I’ll go back and take my wife for her first trip to Asia.
