Gill gun practice this morning

Got out on the back porch early this morning for a little practice with my 1939 Savage 6A with the really tiny front sight - can barely see it at all

. CCI mini-mag HP. Haven't shot it in a couple three years. Shooting from about 40 yds with the rifle resting on the railing and me on my knees. Not the steadiest position as you can tell from the 2 flyers but at least everything was on the paper, and it's a fun plinker.

Do the heat dissipation vents look the same on the other side as the side pictured.

That my friend is a handsome 22 rifle, it has aged well. I'm assuming it shoots all 22 rounds....

There aren't any gills on the right, just the ejection port and the bolt knob. You can shoot shorts and longs, but they don't have enough blowback to fully cycle the bolt, so essentially it becomes a bolt action rifle. If you do load shorts or longs it's advisable to push the bolt knob in to lock the bolt after chambering a round to prevent a short stroke and possible jam.

Long rifle will cycle the action very quickly, faster than any .22 semi-auto pistol, imo.

There's still a lot of these old guns floating around in pawn shops, etc. and you can get a decent one pretty cheap. But if you do make sure it's working properly and all the parts are there. Parts for them can be hard to find. Took me months to find an extractor a few years ago.

I have a Gill-gun that I use about the house...I use only shorts and cycle manually. I do lock the bolt to shoot and it is quite accurate at the ranges it is used for...
