When I was a kid I cut and stacked cord wood till I had blisters under my gloves, but when that huge fireplace roared, and the creek stones it was made of got hot warming the house it was all worth it.

Now I have to settle with a fire pit, but still have to stack cord wood to get ready for the Yankee cold air to invade. But I have to admit, I'm getting too old for this!

Anyone else use firewood?

We burn about 7 cords a year. Here's what we bought this spring, 9 cords. We are a year ahead with our firewood. My wife and I handled 14 cords this year. Your right, the older we get the harder it is to heat with wood. Haven't burned a drop of oil in 4 or 5 years.

Same boat, but both of my places are loaded with old trees and woods where there is a lot of deadfall. It's almost like they store it for me. I use firepits as well, and for them I pull out smaller diameter deadfall so I don't have to split, just cut to size. That wasn't true for my last house with a big fireplace. My brother lives in NH (long cold winters) and has a huge place heated by wood. Part of his property looks like a lumber yard. All splitting by hand.

One thing we've seen locally for the last year is the number of folks who used to sell firewood decrease to almost none.
Why?
With Helene,, we have/had so many trees down & most were free for the asking,, a lot of wood got cut & stored for a few years worth of free fuel.
Just this evening,, at the local grocery store,, on their bulletin board,, was a "Free firewood" sign. All a person had to do was go get it, and maybe cut up some of it.

The way my house is built,, we don't have a real fireplace. We do have gas logs in one bigger room though.
But when I was growing up,, we had a real fireplace. And we knew the wood would warm us 3 times. Once when we cut it, Once when we burned it, and Once when we cleaned out the ashes.

One thing I never figured out is why Black Widows like to hang out in the ash pit under the fireplace. I was probably ten when one of the satanic critter got the back of my hand. I have killed every Black Widow, no matter how small, ever since.

All we had when I was a kid was a wood burning stove for heat.
I had one in my house for the first 30 years of my marriage.
Then I found out , you can get a little switch on the wall that you turn , and heat comes right out of little vents.
What an amazing invention.

My Grandmother is 100 years old. She grew up in a farm house.

She says she wakes up every morning and kisses the thermostat!

She hasn’t had to heat with wood in over 80 years, but has a good memory!

A friend of mine realized he could train his dogs to get a piece of cord wood and bring it inside every time they went out to pee. He thought it was a brilliant idea.

Then the summer came and he had to lug firewood back outside every day! 😂

I had two houses with fireplaces but never used them.... just not worth the effort.
Thankfully, this house doesn't have a fireplace; it remains as "airtight" as I can make it.
