Georgia 'Gator swarm

Not a good time to be trailing hands and/or feet in the water over the side of the boat!
Some of those boys looked kinda big. Probably a lot of 'em 9'-12' in there.

Georgia does have a gator season, but if you don't have your permit yet you're outta luck.

The 2024 season opens at SUNSET on Friday, August 16, 2024, and closes at SUNRISE on Monday, October 7, 2024.

So years ago we were ferrying a UH-1H from Edgewood Arsenal to Corpus Christi and flew over the swamp/ lakes west of New Orleans. Saw LOTS of gators but nothing like that accumulation. That is absolutely incredible!

I'm not a golfer but have been known to get on a course on occasion... was once down with some buddies on Jeckle Island and a guy hit a drive that came near me and it bounced and landed about 2ft out in a pond. He came down looking for the ball and I pointed to where it went in and said, "it landed by that stump that looks like an Alligator." As we walked closer to see if we could see the ball the 'stump' backed up and went under the water......

I was with Nita down near the Sabine NWR and took a photograph of a lone gator (so I thought). When I got the slides (this in another era) developed, I counted about four or five that I had not noticed. Then each time I viewed that slide, I found another heretofore unseen alligator. Count is now up to fourteen!

We, Nita and I, were at the Laguna Atascosa NWR near Corpus Christi, TX. I was photographing wildlife mear a large swamp. To my left, maybe 200 yards away, were two sandhill cranes and five whitetail deer; slightly closer were four or five javelina, across the swamp was one big alligator, maybe fourteen feet. Mallards and pied bill grebes were swimming arojnd. Suddenly that big alligator exploded upwards and a duck disappeared. I wouldn't move, almost not breathing. At least until I noticed a six foot alligator eyeing me from about six or eight feet away. I believe he had a bottle of Louisana hot sauce in his claws!

Gators are interesting to me.
I've been scuba diving in places with them. Seen them while underwater, and also snorkeling. And I've made dives in place where the water was so black, that with a BIG underwater light,, the visibility was about 3 ft in water that was known to have gators.
Only had a few "interesting" moments over the years.

But a gathering like that,, I'd avoid being in the water with that many.

I had to YouTube “Bangstick”. Never saw one. But, we don’t have gators in North Missouri.

I do not know when this tool place, but the state of Luisiana imported nutrea from South America to clean the growth out of the canals there. The country was assured that the alligator population of Louisiana would prevent the nutrea from migrating farther up the Mississippi River.

Hmmm..............I have seen nutrea as far north as Dyersburg, Tennessee, and most recently an alligator was spotted in the Mississipppi River at Memphis.

Bang sticks. I have a few powerheads for my spear gun that are the same as a bang stick. I use them for BIG fish when spear fishing.

Warm Southern waters are full of nasty things. In addition to the alligators, there are some snapping turtles that can take off a finger or toe, or worse. Years ago my neighbor across the street from me caught a big snapping turtle. They put it in the front well of their Jpn boat but it kept trying to get to them. They pushed it back witha boat paddle. The thing bit off the end of the paddle. When they got to Memphis, they donated it to the Memphis Zoo. Unfortunately, the zoo kept it in quarentine and my neikghbor died before seeing it in the zoo.
And alligator gar are nothing to toy around with either. Several of my classmates suffered bites from these gar while swimming at various lakes in Mississippi. And. coming out of the water, there is always the chance of encountering an ill tempered cottonmouth.
