My grandson has been reading a book about the Geneva Convention. While helping me load some rounds for my M1A he had a puzzled look on his face. I asked him what was wrong. He said "Paw if we are invaded you don't have any bullets that are legal by Geneva Convention rules" . I just laughed and said hollow points and soft points make for a quick clean kill so no medic is needed. I just don't want my grandchildren to be that politically correct. I have to sit down with the lad and explain there are no rules if we are invaded. What does the forum think?

If your country is invaded, the Geneva Convention doesn't apply. It's ONLY for organized/government armies that SIGNED into the "convention". DO not that over the years it has NOT always been followed by all the signatories . If I'm fighting invaders, I'll use what ever ammunition comes to hand and the more damage the BETTER.

I seem to recall either reading or being told that unless a militia has been pressed to service by the government the Geneva accords do not apply to them. Problem is I don't remember the source and it could have likely been from a fictional novel where such an inaccuracy was necessary to the story line. However, there is one principle that predates all four of the Geneva conventions- Vae victus, woe to the conquered. In short, if you win you need not worry about it, if you don't... soft nose ammunition will be the least of your worries.

CG is right.
If invaded, and your life & liberty are threatened,,, rules go out the window. Only law abiding people follow all the rules. (And remember, if you follow ONE law or rule, you should follow all of them. That goes for speeders, paying your taxes, etc. Governments sign these treaties, individuals do not.)

If we're invaded, the "Geneva Convention" is gonna be WAY down on my list of priorities.

Besides which, I thought the applicable ammo rules were in the Hague Accords. And I'm given to understand that the US never signed them.

Oh, and here's a little fact you can pass along: Of all the enemies we've fought at war in the last century, the only one who paid any attention to the "Geneva Convention" was--get ready for it--Nazi Germany. And they did only part of the time. True fact. :shock:

But think about this.... if a solder is hit and killed then that is one combatant down... but if he or she is wounded then it takes at least 2 others to get that wounded solder out of harms way... and then multiple people to treat him or her ...... in the mean time while he or she is wounded most likely they are screaming and crying for help which tends to degrade the moral of the other combatants....

then again... I'm pretty sure bombing of civilians is against the Geneva Convention too..... your grandson should have picked up on that one and asked the really big question....... I'll leave the torturing of prisoners for another day....

The agreement prohibiting the use of expanding bullets in warfare between signatory nations was part of the Hague Accords of 1899. The United States was not a signer.

An examination of history will show that the terms "warfare" and "rules" are pretty much mutually exclusive.

BTW, Winston Churchill advocated the use of poison gas on "uncivilized" peoples.

Funny...our military isn't supposed to use expanding bullets on another military but our govt agencies can use them against us...

Common misconception - it was the Hague Convention that addresses bullet types. :roll:

The US did sign the Geneva Accord. But, not the Hague. And I think someone already mentioned that both parties have to be have signed the agreement for it to be in effect.

Oh, by the way, it only spoke to combat. You could guard prisoners with shotguns and such.
