Gas mileage

It was not that long ago that I thought of gas mileage in terms of miles traveled to gallons
consumed. Now that I have been retired for many years, I am coming to think of it in terms
of gallons consumed per month.

I was about to fill up my Subaru about five days before Memorial Day, and then remembered
that gas prices . . always . . go up just before that holiday. So I said to myself "SELF" (I talk to
my self that way), "let's wait until a few days after the holiday, when the prices usually go back
down". - - - They DIDN'T!

I was out getting groceries yesterday and noticed the gas gauge telling me I was just barely
above half tank. Humm . . . . That's over thirty days on less than nine gallons. . . . . AND the
price of gas is starting to go back down. Not by much, but starting to go back down.

Do you think the significant reduction in traffic on the streets and highways is finally starting
to "send a message" to those making EXCESSIVE profits from the gas prices?

Let's hope so.

Even retired old farts like me can help, even it is just barely. ;)

Three years ago I purchased a Honda PCX150 scooter and have not looked back. San Francisco is an overcrowded, compact city, and the little guy is ideal for light shopping, appointments, dinner and just getting around. There's always a place to park, it averages 95 mpg, and so far thieves have ignored it...
The other day I had to go down to City Hall...parking was fifty cents an hour, and I used about a cup and a half of gas. Didn't have to risk contracting TB on the bus, and the car stayed at home. What's not to like?

This is an honest question, but do you really think people are driving less because gas costs more?

Around Dallas, traffic is heavier than it’s ever been. My daughter is going to a summer camp 15 miles from my house. I have to carefully plan how to drive to avoid any traffic congestion.

I would have to see hard numbers to believe there are fewer cars on the road these past few months.

I just got my credit card bill for the gas I burned in the past 30 days. There goes 2 weeks' pay since I was filling the tank every day with 16-20 gallons. Government mileage rate isn't keeping up with increased costs-still stuck in the 52 cents per mile area. I can almost feel sorry for the local guy who was bragging about getting a sub-carrier job at a Post Office 15 miles away. Bet he's not bragging now that he's barely breaking even at best.

I live about one mile from I-95 and travel over it daily. I haven't seen any decrease in traffic. I do know that I don't let my Sonata get much below 1/2 tank. With an 18.5 gal. tank it costs a LOT to fill it if empty. Figures to $92.00 +/- from empty to full.

I read somewhere that there is a new economic term that says (loosely): when consumers stop buying/boycott because of high prices, the corporations just raise prices even higher to make up for the lost revenue and profit. And here I tell everyone to stop buying primers or the prices will never go down; now I'm really confused :)

My sweet wife left her SUV in the middle of the two garage doors when she got home at noon today. Knowing I had a couple of things I need from ACE. It didn't have enough gas in it to get there, 26 gallons and $119.24 later. 17,9 mpg at best in town running around, but it is what it is.

Awful stories above for sure. $119.24 for 26 gallons!!! Disgusting. Got a smaller 4 cyl. SUV myself but need it to haul wood pellets. I'm retired and miss the extra bucks but it would be going out for gas as I had to commute 72 miles round trip.

17,9 mpg at best in town running around, but it is what it is.

I get 30mpg around town and 36-37 on the highway.
Subaru Outback, and the Forester I had previously, was in the same range.

Current price on both starts below $30K.

I bought a new F-250 last fall. It has a 34gal tank. If I let it go till the warning light goes on at 1/8 tank at the current price I would have to dish out almost $160. I usually don't let it get below 1/4 tank now.

Traffic around here hasn't changed much if at all and based upon how quickly they pass me they're not to concerned about fuel consumption.

My truck has a 36 gallon tank. I used to fill up at 1/4 tank, now I top off when I hit 1/2. The fuel pumps shut me off at $100.00 and below 1/2 tank that won't fill it up.

I only get a little over 40 mpg out of mine.

Those 2 wheelers sure save gas BUT I'm seeing a big increase in accidents as apparently, unskilled or out of practice riders run off the road or crash into things.

I also have this little Ranger pickup I bought new in 2003. It averages close to 25 mag. 5 speed, 4 cylinder. I usually drive the jeep one day then the Ranger the next day. I surely don't fill them up very often.

My Ranger is 3.0 V-6 auto . Will do that highway , mixed is 20-22 mpg .

And doesn't pay for me to pass up OT just to save a little gas . Penny wise , pound foolish .

I drive about 4 hours a day for work, in their vehicle, $4.54 a gallon and it cost them $136 to fill it yesterday, I get about 14 mpg and fill up twice a week average, sometimes 3x.
I'd say the traffic is about the same as pre-covid.

I need my truck for work, like many others here. I try & consolidate trips,, make my route to customers in a manner to economize. I also try & keep my foot out of the throttle as much as possible.
And my V-8 Chevy full sized truck gets an average of 18-19 mpg.
Still the cost is stupidly high.
Just yesterday, I stopped to fill up (again,) and the attendant knew my helper. So, as I was finishing up,, I commented that earlier I'd seen the price at a nickle cheaper. He replied; "Yep,, it went up a nickle a few hours ago."
To which I replied; "Well, we get what we vote for,, and since Biden has gotten into office,, the cost has almost doubled since he got in office."
He mumbled a reply that "Yeah it has gone up a lot."
I got in my truck, and as we left,, I asked my buddy about the guy. Yep,, a Biden supporter. He was surprised I didn't get an ear-full from him.

You can NOT deny the facts.

And in my case,, I'm passing along my extra gas expenses to my customers. If it goes back down,, I'll go back down. But if it continues to rise,, I'll keep going up.

Love it, my Super Glide gets 32 MPG and spews hydrocarbons into the atmosphere at an alarming rate...

Would it really come as a big surprise to find out that a vast number of these accidents were caused by inattentive cage drivers? I've been riding, going on 60 years, and have been down twice. First time by the infamous "honest officer. I didn't see the motorcycle" left turn in front of me. Second time by some idiot that rear-ended me at a stop light. (He was reading a newspaper he had laying on the seat next to him.) The saying "ride like they're out to kill you" is no joke.

Still busy here and speed limit is not observed. My Ford Focus gets 40 MPG, my 91 Harley Electra Glide 50, my 56 F100 18 with the 312 T-Bird engine and my 85 Ram 16. So whats the problem. Retired with lots of income.
