I know there's an earlier thread on this, but I thought it important enough to warrant additioinal attention, as what happened above can be applied to ANY questionable firearm.

How many times have we heard, from someone warned about shooting a (pick one) particular type/brand firearm: "Heck, I've been shooting it that way for years." ? ?

Looks like something Elmer Keith might have done...
Load her 'till she blows, then back-off a half-grain.   .

This doesn't really surprise me. I've shot black powder for a long time and know the difference in the powder pressures. When I saw that Savage and supposedly safe to shoot smokeless powder I knew they were asking for trouble. Way back I briefly thought about looking into that Savage but I just didn't have a good feeling about it. Even the Knight Disc and the M-77/50 Ruger said do not use smokeless powder in their rifles and they were built like tanks.

This is going to cost Savage a bundle I'm afraid.

Pete,
Smokeless powder in a black powder rifle? Makes my skin crawl.
Blackie

We load smokeless powder in black powder cartridges all the time and shoot them in guns originally intended for black powder only as well as modern guns that are capable of handling much more pressure than black powder produces. ...so the argument that there should be no cross-over is bogus. There could very well be a rifle that can shoot both powders but it evidently it isn't that one.

It could be that the shooter used the same amount of smokeless powder as black powder ie: 100gr. blackpowder and the same amount in smokeless powder causing the over pressure.
