Future ice fisherman

My son and I have been going out more with my brother in law and his son, who are practically professional ice fishermen. While the fishing wasn't the greatest (both days we went out were the day before storm fronts moved in), my son is starting to come into his own. He listens to every word about how to set up his tip ups he's got, and he is doing ok at jigging.
One day he caught his first lake trout, just shy of being legal, and his next time out, he caught his first tiger musky, small, but they are few and far between up here, most lakes don't have them and what one's do are tough to get one.

The real highlight was watching the airplane come in above our shanty and land on the far end of the lake. Ice fishing is pretty much over here as a warm up is coming in and most fish worth keeping will be out of season before this weekend, but he's hooked and is ready to try again next winter.

Our first trip, in some spots it was 20-24 inches thick on one lake and the second the ice was at least 12 inches thick. It was something when that plane landed on the far end of the ice and you could hear the ice move in waves as the plane pushed down on it as it went along.

Looks like he is having a good time! No need for a shanty if you are drilling through that much ice with a hand auger, that should keep you warmed up. I used to do some ice fishing, but we don't get enough ice most of the time any more to make it worth while. Never had a shanty, did it like you guys, sit on the bucket on a nice sunny day.

What is minimum ice thickness to hold a 6 ton 4x4 truck? What do you think that plane weighs?

That could have been me in the 1940`s and 1950`s in Wisconsin. Even seen cubs and aeronca champs land near by too.
My last go at ice fishing was Christmas day of 1960. Quite memorable. I had just returned from working at Yosemite for a season. A old cousin picked me up and we went ice fishing on lake poygan wisconsin. My mother and dad thought they would drive out and see how we were doing. Dad had a new VW. They drove where they shouldn't have and lost the car in 14 feet of water! They were able to get out okay but did get wet. I didn't see it happen as we were on another area of the lake and it was like a city of people out there. To get the car out we had to wait a week or so and kept the snow shoveled off the ice so it would freeze thicker to set up a makeshift winch tower etc. Finally just after new years day we recovered the VW. The wrecker was attempting to pull me to shore with me steering. The brakes were iced up and the wrecker couldnt get traction. A old man hit me in the rear end with his car in a attempt to get it going. I recall getting out of the car mad to tell him to stop. The next thing I knew we were pulling up to the hospital and my mom was asking me stupid questions, how many fingers, did I know her etc. I recall coming around and as mad as I had been when the lights went out. A few days later I was getting a hair cut. Two guys in there was talking about did ya hear about a feller that got killed on lake poygan getting a VW out? I was wearing a heavy fur russian trooper style cap that day and I think it might have saved me. Another guy seen it happen and said he seen my feet about eight feet in the air and seen me come down on my head. My folks said they couldn't feel a pulse and had prayer over me and I must have been out like a light for 30 to 45 minuets. I know, that now explains everything!

That cub if loaded counting gas shouldn't be over 1250 pounds or so. On skis that weight would be distributed pretty well and remember that tail wheel is farther back then rear tires on a vehicle.

I’ve been watching videos on YouTube of Lake of the Woods in MN. I’ve never driven on a frozen lake,, I suppose it’s safe.
