Funny things that have happened at the range

About the only real range I've visited was the Chaffee county public range north of Salida Co. Son and I would stop by there on our way back to the campground after doing our weekly laundry/grocery shopping in Salida. Some of the 'stuff' I saw was absolutely scary and/or incredibly funny. There were no 'range officers' and apparently darned few shooters with much experience.
I watched one fool start walking out to his target while others were still firing. Another was holding his 38 snubbie like he was squeezing a grapefruit (fingers wrapped around the front of the cylinder). Possibly the most entertaining was a younger 'dude' who showed up dressed in full 'battle rattle' garb and was in front of the firing line doing tuck, roll, and shoot sequences (only he and I were at the range that day). When I asked him the WHY?? of these antics, he informed me he was a guard at the prison up the road and was practicing his prisoner escape drills. This seemed a bit odd as the prison was a minimum security facility and the dairy cows kept there were more likely to attempt escape than the humans. I watched one guy shoot the end out of his gun case while shoving a supposedly unloaded rifle into the case--fortunately pointed downrange. Another guy was shooting 5 shot 'strings' over and over w/o ever seeming to hit his target. I began watching him and he'd shoot 5 shots, look through his spotting scope, twiddle with his scope, and repeat. I ambled down the line to get a better look and saw the scope's adjustment knob covers were still in place--he was just twisting the covers.
