Front strap checkering

I am seriously considering having my SR1911's front strap checkered for a more secure grip. Does anyone have an idea what a gunsmith would charge for this job? Any negative opinions on doing this? I don't like wrap around rubber grips on a 45. Comments please.

Skate board tape. Save $$$$ works great. Checkering from $125-250 depending on LPI you want.

I gotta admit that a properly checkered front strap is perty-cool, but I gots my doubts about how usefull it actualy is.
I do agree about about them wrap-around rubber grips though. Plain (checkered) walnut that retains the original grip-feel suits me just fine.

I like the skateboard tape myself.
It may not last as long as the checkering , but with the money I saved I can buy a lot of ammo.

The checkering makes a huge diffence, especially on the short-barrel, short-grip models. Probably not so huge with a Gov't model....

I don't use the cut-down versions, but I can imagine that the more one deviates from JMB's design, the more controlability he looses.... So I'll take your word on that. :D .

The checkering does make a huge difference, especially if you shoot stout self defense loads. You have to remember that your hands aren't always going to be dry.
The best thing to do is shop around at your LGS's and do a hands on comparison to see if it's worth the expense to you.

I have several 1911's that have checkered front straps, along with the bottom of the trigger guard, I like it over non-checkered frames. I have both. So far the SR1911;s have eluded me, but I'll get one eventually...
