I have an older 10/22 that someone ground the front sight down. They stopped about 1/4" above the dovetail. I've tried to tap the old sight out with a brass punch, but can't get it to budge. Any help would be appreciated.
Soak it with penetrating oil, lay it on your workbench with the left side of the rifle facing up, support the end of the barrel with a wood block, you may need someone to help you hold it steady, use a steel punch, strike straight down with your hammer and punch. Give it a good whack, tapping may not be enough. A brass punch is for when you don't want to mar the sight, in this case it's already ruined so use a steel punch. A couple solid hits should drive it out.
