Hi. New to the forum and to Ruger revolvers. I own many auto's but this is my first foray into the world of revolvers. I recently picked an SP101 chambered in .327 Federal. After having put 300+ Rounds of various ammo through it, I'd like to replace the front sight. I was all set to order either a Meprolight or the fiberoptic from Gemini Customs, until I realized the front post on the .32/.327 model is taller than .38/.357 model.

Not much info on the forums for the .327 so curious if anyone has tried these sights on the SP101 in this caliber.

TIA

I don't know why the 327 would have a higher front sight. Heavy loads usually require a taller front sight to compensate for more recoil. I'm sure a heavy 357 magnum has a lot more recoil than any 327 magnum. There really can't be that much difference anyway.

I have a Meprolight to put an my SP-101 but haven't gotten around to it yet. Here is a good post on changing the front sight.

Thanks for the info and links. I believe the front sight is taller on the .327 model to account for the taller rear sight. According to the Ruger Manual there are three front sights available for the SP101:

W03602 - .38/.357/9mm
W03603 - .22
W03604 - .32 H&R/.327 FM

That being said I'm willing to give the Mepro a try, just don't want to spend $45 if its going to drastically change the POI. Right now I've got nailpolish on the front sight which I'm not a fan of.

Also, just came across this link:

aaaaaah I see. I didn't know that. I wonder how much higher it is? I will do some checking and try to get back.

Looking at the pics on the Ruger site there looks to be a significant height difference. Sorry about the mis-information.

I'm also looking to replace the front sight on a SP101. Thanks for posting the links above, looks like some good info in there.

Some reviews of the sight at Midway.com say it is slightly taller than the 38/357 factory sight so you might be good to go or at least close to the right height. :D

Thanks Jimbo. I'm thinking about ordering it and checking the height with a caliper before I start drilling. If its way out of range I guess I can return it.

Because you have to drill the hole for the roll pin it might be possible to raise the sight a little in the channel if necessary. :D
