Front sight for Security Six

I have a first-year production Security-Six and I'd like to have the standard ramp front sight blade replaced with a flat-faced Patridge-style blade. I spoke with one gunsmith who said he could fabricate a new sight but the estimate was $275, much more than I want to spend. Does anyone have any suggestions?
 
I don't know anyone who markets a front sight blade like that. Try Copeland Custom Pistolsmithing in Arkansas City, KS. He does really good work and is reasonable. He just made a new front sight for me on my S&W 625 as well as a number of other modifications. He doesn't have a web site, but you can reach him at 620-442-7470.
 
I'm not much when it comes to gun smithing or parts, etc, but If you want the base and the front sight, It might be cheaper to buy a whole barrel, and they are available on e bay and other places. Just buy one with sights and you can either take the sights off or switch barrels. I bet you can get a barrel for 1/2 of what you were quoted.
 
I think your only option is custom or barrel replacement.

If it really is a first year production gun, it may be a shame to customize it but ..... your gun; your call.
 
Thanks for the info. The front blade is pinned in, so I can still keep it original if I can get a new blade made up to attach the same as the original. I wouldn't think of having something soldered on or anything like that. It's definitely a first year gun, and one of the first hundred made. It was engraved years ago at the Ruger Studio in Southport. It is the prettiest shooter I own.

There are a lot of accumulators on here as well. You might want to advertise in the classifieds a WTB: posting I doubt the front sights very much maybe you could find someone with something very close.

I think Bear Paw Jack needs to reread the original question. jackm wants a patridge. I doubt Ruger ever made a patridge for Six Series revolvers.

However I agree with him that this shouldn't be a $275 project. Can we see a picture of the existing front sight to be sure what's required?
 
I don't know how to attach a photo yet but the sight blade standard ramp common to the Security-Six. What I need is to find someone who can make a Patridge blade the same height and length, and with the same underside so that it will pin into the integral base. All for less than I paid for the gun, if possible.
 
Try Jim Stroh of Alpha Precision (www.alphaprecisioninc.com). He made a McGivern Gold Bead sight for a Colt Magnum Carry I had that had the standard ramp sight. The McGivern is just a patridge with a gold bead.
 
For a similar installation of a partridge front sight (pinned) I used the Bowen pin-in front sight blank. I used the existing front sight as a pattern to file/fit the base of the new sight and then filed the Partridge portion to the shape I wanted and finished it with a cold blue finish. I then had the gunsmith drill/pin the new sight in place. The gunsmith could have done the whole job, but it's a lot of filing/hand fitting and the shop time adds up...

Sure sounds like a home-brew, flie or dremal to fit project to me! Also sounds like your man did not really want the work.
 
I don't know. I talked with him, seemed like a good guy. But he was talking about fabricating a blade from scratch, machine time, etc. Per one suggestion I emailed Jim Stroh--he's not too far from our winter pace in Florida. He quoted me a significantly lower price, with a gold bead. I'm going that route.
