From Shorter to Longer Brass When Reloading .32

For several years I have enjoyed reloading and shooting .32 H&R Magnum in a Ruger revolver chambered for that caliber. My favorite load of those that I've worked up thus far has been loaded with a 95 grain projectile, and they shoot really well.

Recently a friend graciously gave me a quantity of Sierra .32 FMJ projectiles that are 71 grain. I'm wondering whether I should try to hunt up some .32 brass, or to use the longer .32 H&R brass that I'm already using, and boost the powder charge to compensate for the longer brass length? Any insights would be appreciated.

Load them in the Mag cases. Adjust the load according to the manuals.

Data for that 32 ACP bullet is going to be hard to find for the 32 H&R brass. I found a discussion on the S&W forum that might help you.

Whatever load you have been using with the 95 grain bullet should be fine with the 71 grain bullet to start with. Then you can work up from there. Go slow.

I think M.D. Smith has some data for the FMJ bullets on his website in 32 H&R. You might try there. Google "reloading pages of M.D. Smith".

Just don't expect to hot rod the velocities .

Not for any safety reasons , but the 71gr bullets have much less bearing surface than those intended for .32 revolvers . You should be fine reasonably close to .32acp vels , but as you work up , keep an eye on group sizes .

There is a guy that goes by "Sevens" on another forum that worked with 71 grn bullet in the 327FM when that was all he could find. I understand that's not an H&R but might be something you can work with.
