My wife (born and raised in West Germany) is on the phone with one of her childhood friends. The whole conversation is in German Schwaebisch dialect. Having been married to her for the past 32 years, you'd think I would be completely fluent in German. You think wrong.

They could be carefully plotting my assassination and I would be none the wiser.

It ain't easy to be a dumb ass.

I met her at a bus stop in Germany. Long story. I was new in country. Brand new 2LT. Tried to board a bus to my base. It turned out to be a school bus. I didn't understand. My wife saw what was going on and tried to help. Bad move on her part!

I went back to Germany numerous times on Army deployments. She went back numerous times to assist her dying father. Sadly; never together.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. The Lovely Mrs. Snake is from Nicaragua. She's on the phone with her sisters quite a bit.

Here's something interesting: She can talk in her sleep in both Spanish and English! :shock: (You'd think it would be one or the other, and I'd guess Spanish.)

My mom took German in high school so she could figure out what her mom and grandmother were talking about. It didn't help they spoke the old High German and that's not what they taught in school.
Also - so much for assimilation my grandmother and great grandmother were both born in Michigan and fluent in German. My g grams parents did come from Germany and settled in Scio MI in 1835. Being good Lutherans Shortly after the birth of their last daughter in 1848 they packed up and moved to the MI Thumb to "minister to the Indians". Interesting read on how the women and kids were sent by canoe on the streams while the men hacked their way through the woods with wagon loads of food and household goods.

England, France, Italy, the US. All declared war on lots of folks twice in less than 30 years. Maybe they didn’t initiate the action but they did indeed issue declarations of war.

I shot off my mouth once at church in stating that I did not advise couples of mixed race or culture to marry. I have had young couples at my church to ask me for advice, though I tell them I'm no counselor, but they ask me any way. As, as best as I can will tell them my opinion, and why.

A friend of mine was widowed, and in time he chose to remarry. The woman of his choice was of a different belief. They married and in time, her beliefs prevailed and now neither one has any relationship with any church. They came half heartedly for a few Sundays, then quit altogether. She has not allowed him to have any contact with any of his friends at our church.

As Scripture states, "Be not unequally yoked" is sound advice. Anything that causes compromise in Spiritual or moral beliefs is far from good.

Please understand, there are cases where everything works out for good, but then............

My wife lived in Germany for over 10 years and speaks the language fluently. Though I have no interest in learning the language, I'm glad that she did learn it; it gives her much pleasure to chat with her friends in Germany via Zoom, Duo or WhatsApp.

Added note: a couple of years ago one of my wife's German friend's daughter came here to the States. This beautiful young grad student had shooting on her bucket list...she is now a successful European attorney with a love for Ruger Single Sixes. Which will probably keep her visiting the States on occasion...

I too married a foreigner; she is from Massachusetts. We have been married for over forty three years and I still don't understand her. My maternal great grand parents were from Germany (ggmom) and France (ggfather). I was told they only spoke English once they came to the USA as that was now their native language. The only thing I ever heard my ggmom say, in German' was "die Kinder wachsen" (the children grow).

Three of my four gparents came from Germany, one grandparent had an English name but was 1/2 German. At age three I spoke with a German brogue I have been told. I understand a bit of German more Spanish. My son has been married x 2. First to an Ecuadorian, the second wife’s mother is from Puerto Rico, her father is from Mexico. Our world is certainly diverse!

New Mexico Magazine used to have a little item called "One of our fifty is missing". It was stories about folks thinking New Mexico was part of Old Mexico.

My own story involves the USPS. I wanted to send a package to Santa Fe. The window clerk came back with a rate that included some sort of overseas fees. I tried to correct her but she insisted. I ask for her supervisor. He to insisted it was not part of the US. In frustration I ask to see the post master. After some stalling he came down and I explained that I wanted to send a package to Santa Fe New Mexico. Even this idiot insisted it was in Mexico.

Another person in line finally came to the rescue and she produced her drivers license from the state of New Mexico. There was a general out cry of laughter from those in the lobby.

My dad's grandparents eloped to Detroit from Canada. Both were Scottish. He was Presbyterian and she Catholic. He had never really been a "church guy" since he generally worked 7 days a week overseeing a stable of horses for his employer. She became Presbyterian much to the chagrin of her parents who were proudest of her sister who became a nun.
I married a girl of mixed race - German, English, French and Shawnee. I've even found some dreaded slave owners and a guy who deserted the CSA and came to CA. None of which would have been a deal killer for me if I knew it 50 years ago when we got married. My finding she had a ggetc grandmother who was hung in Salem for being a witch has really explained some things though.
