Ford Explorer back up camera

We had to replace our Ford Flex after Helene dropped a tree on it and went to Carmax and bought a 2014 Ford Explorer.... in pretty good shape but the one problem I discovered was the back up camera was not a mirror image. When you go on line and research it all the web sites say the problem is the camera is reversed... my gripe is the real problem is it is not reversed. You want a mirror image on the screen just like when you are looking in the rear view mirror. The good news is I figured out how to fix it and it really did not cost that much or take that much time. This is after watching a YouTube video twice. You replace the camera and this takes about 20 minutes with the right tools. Now why a camera would go from mirror image, the way it is designed, to a standard image is beyond me. That's how I spent my day... doing this short fix and removing parts of my roof that were hanging off the front and down in the master bedroom.....

Oh and yes I know I should have taken the car back to Carmax and let them fix it but I really don't have the time these days to deal with things like this.... dropping a car off and then going and picking it up.

YouTube is a great resource for fixing many car related issues. Recently I learned how easy it was to fix the broken door handle on our Fusion. Other than $75 for the all plastic assembly I was done in about 30 minutes.

I should have looked up how to replace the key pad on the door of our Ford Explorer..... it never worked right and I was scared to get a quote from the Dealership.... but then Helene's visit fixed that problem.

had to get rid of it, the sun roof would no longer open....

Some people are lost without their camera, can't back up using their mirrors. My Wife is one of them.

I'm curious also. But wouldn't a mirror image be more confusing? Isn't the camera suppose to replicate what you would see if you turned your head?

I turn and look to make sure I'm not going to hit anything, then use the camera to finish. The little green and yellow lines about where the tires will go are very helpful.

Never mind, I had to go out and back my truck up. Yes it should be a mirror image. To replicate the rear view mirror.

At least for me and most folks the non mirrored image is just not right or 'natural'. The nice thing about the cameras is they actually show what you can't see behind you in the mirrors and even give you a better idea of how close you are getting to something. I put one on my work van many years ago and it is a real comfort when you are backing out of a customer's drive way. One of the first really good things I learned about these cameras was on a road trip and we pulled into a rest area and parked diagonally... then a big vehicle truck or van parked to the right of us so that I could not see if anything was coming up behind me as I was backing out... but the camera lets me see this. Resolution on the screen is so good you can even see a car coming in a couple hundred yards away.

yes. The camera will show a touch more than 180 degrees. So when backing up, like at the grocery store you can see just past of the car alongside.

My L-3-4-5 vertebrae are fused together. Turning my head to see backwards is virtually impossible. For that reason, I rely on the backup camera, side view cameras, etc.

I usually back up until I hit something..........or hear someone screaming (THAT works best....if I have my hearing aids in place).

Summer job just out of hight school was doing clean up in a fertilizer refinery and riding with an old black man named Wilson in a dump truck. I learned quick to just rest my head against the back windshield when he was backing up to a dumpster... he'd be dong about 5 mph and when he hit it he'd say, "well, I guess that's close enough."

Also on most newer cars you can change the view while you are in reverse. So if you want a bird’s eye view, or from up high or from down low, or focused on the left or on the right sides.

I just found this feature a couple weeks ago in a car we’ve had for 3 years now. I just never bothered to press the buttons on the screen while backing up.
