Flatgate pawl?

I picked up a nice looking Flatgate this weekend SN 20xxx and am looking for some info. I have never messed with any single action revolvers but am getting sort of addicted to Ruger revolvers.

I really don't think that this one was shot much as there is almost no drag line on the cylinder but when the hammer is resting on the FP the cylinder can be rotated counter clockwise about an eight inch. When the hammer is back all the way the cylinder can only be rotated back about 1/16". It seems to me that there is maybe too much wear on the pawl to catch completely, or is this normal?

If not, is the pawl something I can replace myself? I am trying to avoid sending this to Ruger at all costs since it is yet unconverted 8)

If the gun had been handled properly there would be NO drag line on the cylinder....... JMHO.

I'd investigate the cylinder latch and its' spring which is accessible by removing the grip frame. You could, at first, simply remove the cylinder then check the "tension" of the cylinder latch.

yessir, if there is NO tension on the "pawl" ( the pointed end will stick out of the front fromthe recoil shield, the pawl 'spring & plunger just may be 'stuck' ( hung up) and a bit of oil ,like 'Kroil' can be put in, get around the back,inside to "help" free it up, other wise you will have to remove the grip frame, and check its "free" or NOT put in "backwards" ( saw one ike this just recently the guy picked up from Gander Mountain, and they put it together "backwards") :roll:
