Flap holster for "Field" Use.

Now that I'm working on a hunting pistol I'm deciding what kind of holster to make for it. Flap holsters protect the gun from the elements while allowing for comfortable carry.

When I first got out of the service I used my issued Bianchi UM84 with my 1911 in it when scouting. However, I wasn't going to hunt with my 1911. I had a GP100 and Super Blackhawk for that. Chest rigs are the way to go when hunting in my opinion. I have cheap one for my G40 10MM. But if I get back into it after fully healing from my most recent surgery I am going to order a Gunfighters Inc. Kenai chest rig for it, and probably for my 6" GP100.

I usually use a Shoulder Rig for my Bigger Guns. A chest rig IMO would get in the way more depending on my gear(pack, bino's etc. Even my Scoped 10" 44 I carry with a 45° cant in a shoulder rig.

When I carried a Security Six or Super Blackhawk, I used a full flap holster. They do an excellent job of keeping dust or rain off the gun. Also protect against wear/damage from tractor seats, barbed wire gouges, and other 'stuff'.

Back when I was walking in the woods I had one of those military harness belt rigs with several pouches packed with items along with a canteen and K-bar knife and on my right side was a cloth entrenching tool holder and a Ruger P95 fit in it perfectly.

flap holsters work well. They can be fast to unholster the handgun. Need to practice that just like with any holster.

Assume you would want something that will protect the optic as well? I have a crossdraw holster for my scoped 45 Bisley, but the scope is exposed. I was thinking a pistol rug with molle straps or belt loops might work well. I usually have my gun in hand when spot and stalk or still hunting, so a fast draw from leather isn't really critical. I just need a way to carry it, to free up my hands.
