I would think you are giving up some velocity from that cartridge as that is the reason for the 7.5" barrel in the first place...but whatever turns your crank is fine with me.
It's a rifle caliber, you give up plenty in a pistol period. It's not a target or hunting pistol, it's a fun shooter and I like 4 5/8 barrels. I buy when I can, or cut all my SA pistols to 4 5/8, because that's what I like. I just cut an old model Flat top 44 as well. The only one I haven't shortened is my 357 Maximum and I would one of those if I come across another at a good price. It's only a barrel swap. Could always be put back

44 Flat top is not here right now, it's being cut. I have the 45 Colt on top left, that should letter as factory Brassie. I also have another factory brass gripframe that is being fit to 44 as well, so I will have a matching pair.

And your New Model will shoot .32-20s fine, too. Still a flamethrower, but not QUITE like the .30 Carbine!
The Black Hills .32-20 "Cowboy" lead loads make great small game and plinking starters (they're darned near silent in my 26" bbl. Win Low Wall, and real comfortable in my little 5" Colt Police Positive). And you get the Starline brass for more serious handloads!
The SAAMI Max pressure for the 30 carbine is 40,000 psi same as the 357 maximum. The 357 magnum is 35,000 psi. If you load any of those or even any magnum caliber handgun to the Max with H-110 you will get a pretty good flame thrower.
I like the barrel length but in that caliber it truly is going to be a flame thrower...out to 15' or so you won't need to hit 'em...it'll incinerated 'em...and so much for paper targets...tough to check for grouping if all you have to examine is a small pile of ashes!
All that aside, very nice grips on that beauty...are they spalted maple? or maybe a very light circassian walnut? Forgive the ?spelling? it the foregoing...I'm too laze to look them up...Rod
