Five month wait

Took a barrel from my 22/45 to the local gunsmith to be threaded for a suppressor He said that it would be a while, he was backed up some. I asked "How long a while?". He said "Maybe five months!" I told him to give me a call when it's done. It wouldn't get done sitting in the safe.

I once ran a lathe 10 hours per day for six years, and this process would take a whole 20 minutes to accomplish... And, that's a Friday afternoon watching the clock and milking for all it's worth time quote.

I haven’t encountered too many gunsmiths that weren’t backed up for months (to a couple years). I’ve also been turned away by most machine shops because they tool up for contact work and do not want to stop what they’re doing for someone’s personal project. Only on two occasions did it work out for me at a machine shop: one guy was a good friend and it did the work as a friend, and the other guy at a different shop was a young guy needing extra money and his boss let him do the work after-hours. (I called back a year later for another project and he was gone and that door was closed for me.)

I can't say if the guy is truthful or not BUT there is or will be a LOT of this sort of work coming in most shops.
FWIW, the prices of factory threaded take off barrels has increased significantly lately. All those folks sitting on the fence over the $200 tax stamp are now sitting in line.

Problem is there are lots of Gun Shops that sell and can mount a scope but not repair or modify firearms. A true gunsmith or restoration shop that turns out quality work is a rare find! On Facebook there is a thread for gunsmith's which seems to be, "my husband or dad died. Is there anyone interested in his stuff?"

my point was meant to be..... it's an easy job for anyone skilled with a lathe and lots of shops nearby would would do it much quicker if you didn't want to wait

You are 100% correct..... Too bad that is rarely all the gunsmith is doing, nor do most barrels come ready to go, nor are all barrels the same diameter with the same threads.

@Fox Mike has a true gunsmith, who, since he is ready to leave it for 5 months, he has used before and trusts implicitly. My gunsmith has 4 of my guns. One that is so "back burnered" that it has been there for over a year and hasn't even been started on (an old milsurp k98 that I want restored to milspec), 2 rifles that are getting the chambers reamed for .223 Wylde, and a Rossi lever gun that keeps firing out of battery.

There are some things I can't do and have to rely on a local smith. He has all the machinery and applicable tools to do it right. He is a medically retired SWAT guy that I knew from years back and worked with a couple times. We know a lot of the same folks. In fact that's how I found out he opened a side smithing business, and was only a 15 min drive away. I knew he was needing business to make ends meet as he was recovering and threw him some work. I had dropped off a pistol and he said it would be a few months as he was backed up. I didn't hear from him after a few months and followed up. He had found a good paying EP job and it was taking up his time with most gigs requiring travel.....I dropped it off APR 18th....almost a year ago.

He's a great guy...but holy smokes. I'm inclined to just get it back. But as the OP stated the work won't get done sitting in the safe and I don't have access to a machine shop like his.

Try to get a 357 lever action threaded. Just buy a 22/45 with a threaded barrel. I did years ago.

I had Dave Clements make one of my Bearcat Shopkeepers into a 22 WMR. He had the gun for a few months before I got it back. I never expect someone to drop all previous work and go directly to mine. It is called "wait your turn".

Well the wait is over. Little over a month and I got an email that "my barrel was ready." Shortest 5 months I have ever spent.

Recently had to deal with 2 manufacturers & independent gunsmiths & all claimed they were backed up. Taurus had me wait 4 months, S&W 5 months (to tell me it was unrepairable, but I fixed it).

In the past two months, my GS has had to fix 6 different guns due to trying to use the wrong cartridge, and 1 gun that the guy left the laser boresight in the barrel.

Luckily no one has been hurt, but most of what he has been dealing with is barrel threading, customer caused issues, or true custom work (gun builds).

The work looks great, threaded and moved the sight back some. Now I have to go through the BS to buy a suppressor. I can't understand the Government at times. I have a carry permit for Maryland that required finger prints, I spent 30+ years in the Military with a very high security clearance (finger prints). I have an 03FFL and now need to be fingerprinted to purchase a suppressor.
