Enjoy, not for the squeamish. It does get technical.

As a small kid in Colorado in the 40's we had several fireworks stands along Colorado Blvd and Cherry Creek in Denver...everyone went to buy fireworks..no not the sparklers and worms that are around today but honest to God man size fireworks...one time someone set off either a rocket or roman candle and set off one of the stands...man what a display..for a few minutes...never forget that one..best ever.

Being a kid in the 60's,in the South, you were exposed to the real cherry bombs, M-80's and such that were easily purchased in the southern counties of Va. and in North Carolina.
You must and did have respect for them as in place on ground or under a can and light and run!

Along with those REAL chemistry sets we had a great time growing up!

In Bartlesville, OK we had a fireworks warehouse and they had a sales counter inside so we could buy year round. Cherry Bombs, M-80's and everything. Seen them blow up a toilet bowl the last day of school and they sure could make a locker door bulge.
A friend discovered model aircraft "thermal fuse" used to bring down free flight models after a set time; he used it as a time fuse on Cherry bombs (I forget the burn rate, but he knew). Funniest time with it was one night after going to the movies down town, we were walking home together ( only lived a block apart) and he set a Cherry bomb by the corner of a building at an intersection, we were about two blocks up the street when KaBoom ! Looked back and a police car is setting there waiting for the light to change. We was innocent cause we was too far away. I bet they STILL wonder who set off that cherry bomb right there by them.

Back in the 1950s, you could buy them at the supermarket in Springfield MO. They had whole aisles of fireworks, like other seasonal items (Halloween masks and candy, etc.). Somebody lit it up one day (you could smoke in the store in those days too) and burned down the supermarket (rockets were flying all over the store), along with an old woman and two of her granddaughters who were trapped in the Ladies. It is still illegal to sell or shoot fireworks in my home town, 60 years later. Of course, that means there is a cluster of tents just outside the city limits on every highway out of town.

I don't know about thermal fuses, we just poked the fuse into the butt of a lit unfiltered cigarette.

When I was a kid cherry bombs, silver salutes, and M-80's were available at every major holiday. Cherry bomb worked great shot out of a slingshot. We also made mortars by getting a length of pipe with a threaded cap that a golf ball would just fit in, we would bury about a foot of it in the ground at a angle. To fire it we would light a cherry bomb, m-80, etc. drop it in the tube followed by a golf ball. It would shoot the golf ball out of sight.

And the poor golfers took the rap for knocking small airplanes out of the sky.

Call me a sissy, but I steer clear of fireworks. Let the pros to that.

Back in the mid-90's I was active duty Army at Fort Polk, LA (field artillery). The unit armorer was dinking around with some homemade fireworks at a party at his home. He blew off his right hand and lost a couple fingers from the left as well.

One of the guys at the party was really shook up. He talked to me afterward. He said minutes after the explosion, he looked down on the ground and the fire ants were swarming all over the place carrying away little pieces of flesh.

In high school, my brother got hold of a couple of cherry bombs. Since the fuse was waterproof, we took them out on the lake in our little jon boat. The first was lit and thrown, exploding very near the surface. That wasn't what we wanted. The second was tied to a rock, lit, and dropped at arms length from the boat. The breeze drifted the boat right over the ensuing explosion, which we thought would tear the bottom out of the boat. One of the guys on our school bus heard what we had done, and decided to throw a cherry bomb in a concrete stock tank. It cracked, and he got a beating from his dad.

Yep, that's what I used to use. Not sure it will work now, I've heard that most cigs these days have a chemical that won't let them smolder... damn liberals!

Oh, and I learned that trick from the movie "Stalag 17".

Some moron lost his fingers on his left hand here yesterday.
I worked the ER and I hated the 4th of July.
It's funny that I can't remember any of them accepting responsibility.
"I was being careful.....the fuse burned too fast......it was defective".

Come on folks, let's all go play with explosives once a year.
It will be fun.

There was a fatality here last evening due to fireworks. A 25yr old man was looking to see why the second mortar in the tube didn't go off. Unfortunately it did as he looked it over. Coroner says it hit his chest and stopped his heart.

Hey now...Otis never messed with fireworks. About the worst thing he ever did was buy himself a cow, thinking it was a horse named "Old Paint".
