Any issues with leaving handguns in their plastic factory boxes within a safe?
I'm storing my son's stuff until he gets back. I take them out once and awhile and wipe them down.

Thinking of getting a small rack for the safe, to store them in the open.
Are those fabric zipper rug/cases any better?

I store my pistols and revolvers on shelves in my safe. Boxes stacked up
in the closet. The way I look at it is open storage will not trap any moisture.
Rifles and shotguns the same theory.

Well, I got my Two 50th Anniversary model 44 Mag Blackhawks still in their original boxes, BUT I also got them wrapped in cloth that was used to wipe down the excess gun oil when I cleaned them.
Should add I guess that they ARE kept in our Gun safe in a location where they wont get moved around.

Do not store in a fabric rug case. I have seen a few in my day rust from being stored inside those. Same goes for shadowboxes with the felt background. Where the pistol or knife was in contact, it rusted. Just my observations, your results may vary.

Never had any problem storing guns in their plastic factory boxes, I wouldn't use fabric gun cases for storage they can collect and hold moisture.

I don't have room to store hand guns loose, so each is in a fabric gun case. My rifles are stored in foam lined cases.
A dehumidifier keeps moisture level at or below 50% in summer. Winter humidity is around 35%.
I've never had a rust issue, but it is a constant concern, so I check frequently.
IF I had the money for additional safe(s), all would be stored "commando" style as suggested in above posts.

I have stored my guns in cases for 45yrs, inside and outside of a safe, and never once had an issue with them rusting. I have a Winchester shotgun that was given to me Christmas of 1970 that is still stored in the case from that Christmas morning...it is in pristine condition. So, what does this prove??? It proves that different folks have different experiences...and all of my guns will be stored in cases.
