Everything hurts

Yesterday I went for a morning bike ride, as I usually do when the weather is warm, but it ended rather quickly. Coming down the bike path I approached someone walking more or less in the middle of the path. I yelled out "On your left" and the person moved to the right of the path so I continued past him on his left. Just as I was passing him he veered to the left and crashed right into me, sending me and my bike sprawling onto the ground. He was an older guy, and apologized profusely, saying he didn't hear me and he really should have been wearing his hearing aide. My bike was a wreck but I felt OK. This morning I woke up with everything hurting and what I fear is a re-injured rotator cuff since I can barely raise my arm. If I don't feel a bit better by tomorrow I guess it means a visit to the doctor and then whatever is needed to heal, but at 72 you just don't heal as well as when you are 32. Adding this to the severe arthritis pain in my hands is making this a miserable Sunday morning. How fast things can change for the worse. I guess this ends my plans for going to the range today, and for a motorcycle ride tomorrow. At least the bike can be repaired and won't need to be replaced. I think the only thing I will be riding for awhile is my computer.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune on the bike path. Glad you didn't break any bones. You seemed to predict this in a previous post. Perhaps you should look for places to ride where there aren't any walkers, like a quiet road. ...but then there might be cars. :(

Think Positive! All will return to normal ! I'm 73, ride a motorcycle several days a week. 1-1/2 years ago, I lost control of my motorcycle in a curve, ran in the ditch, and broke 6 ribs. Everything healed. Praise the Lord. Hopefully, you will have the same results. :)

Yep, when I go for my walks on the local track, the bicycles fly up so fast behind us it's difficult to know just which way to dodge them, no matter how loud they yell at us at the last second that they're coming thru.

But I know pedestrians are unpredictable too. When I used to ride a bicycle a lot, if I had to share a path with walkers or runners, I had to come to a near stop when passing them, as they were just plain oblivious.

I'm sorry you're injured. Hope you get to healing really fast.

Hi,

We have a local path that's a two parter: there's both a sidewalk and a bike path, separated by some foliage. For whatever reason, the pedestrians never use the sidewalk, and seem to think they own the bike path. There's actually a section where the City has added a painted "bike lane" on the road, which is sometimes safer to use. Back on the path, using Wayno's approach has kept me upright untold numbers of times.

Best of luck with the healing process, vito!

Rick, I noticed those greenish blueish? bike lanes going along Brookside the other day. It seems to be a great idea.

Was that older guy older than you? I can identify with "hurt". My left shoulder area, especially, has been hurting lately and I have aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen aplenty. I've been working on fairly heavy, bulky things recently like mowers and outboard motors.

The only time I recall everything hurting was the day after a eight-hour snowmobile ride ten or more years ago.

Heal well and quickly!

Ouch! Been there, done that too! Keep that shoulder iced for 48 hours, then heat. Sorry about the fall. My father was former military (Master Sergeant ). " I hurt therefore I am"! Yep, you're still on the correct side of the daisies.

70% DMSO... it'll work for your arthritis too.

I think Pam uses it's brother, MSM?

You could Google them.

I hope your just sore and nothing more .
I have a mountain bike too, but have yet to do any serous trail riding on it yet,as I'm scared I'll bust up either my ankle or shoulder again .
I don't want to go through that again .
Hope you heal up soon and fully.
Lou

Vito, I hope it all proves to be just aches and pains.

I hate 'bike trails' for just those reasons. My very first time (years ago) on a bike trail on Cape Cod I was run off the path by a 'rent-a-biker' coming the other way.

I had my own close call yesterday:

Hit something at a bit over 30 mph. Nearly tossed me off the bike, barely able to keep one hand on the handlebar.

Its been two days now since my crash, and fortunately my arm and shoulder feel a bit better, so maybe I haven't re-injured the rotator cuff after all and its just a deep bruise. I'm trying to be hopeful because bike riding is my primary exercise. I used to be a runner, which was much safer, but that ended years ago when I had to get both knees replaced. Its hard enough to avoid gaining weight as it is, I have no idea what I would do if I couldn't ride my bike or exercise at the gym at least several days a week (I guess I could cut down on eating the things I enjoy and give up my nightly shot of Jameson's but that would be a tragedy!). Using an exercise bike at the gym certainly is safer, but not nearly as satisfying. Maybe I will start riding my bike in the streets so I can safely avoid pedestrians and just worry about being squashed by a car or truck.

I just got back from a bike ride. I try to rude 3 or 4 times a week. It is a mix between bike path and a quiet street. I go up to Plano, Texas where the cars are "supposed" to let bikes use a full lane on the road. I haven't crashed but have had many close calls.

I hope you feel better. What about the possibility of finding some of thr really quiet back roads. You live in Rockford don't you? I used to drive through there on the way to thr gun range near Polo Illinois. Outside of town aren't there some really quiet stretches of highways?

Urinate on them; I like to ride in the bike lane FACING traffic; If some MORON is gonna Run over my butt, I wanna see him coming and have a chance to dodge; especially in the fall and winter when we got all them elderly Snowbirds down from up North.

It must have been a week for it. Doing practice intervals in our state park (the only safe place to do them) I see a couple of your girls riding in circles on the left side of the road. Normally I don't pass on the right but they were on the left. So, I yelled loudly, passing on the right. Naturally one of the girls veered just past the centerline. So, I repeated the call, very loudly, passing on the right. She immediately turns directly in my path. I aim for the side of the road, but she keeps moving directly across the road blocking my path. She keeps going to the right. So, here I am, on a time trial bike which has the handling characteristics of a large falling log, taking to the grass at roughly 25mph. The bike goes everyway but straight as I try to maintain control. The good thing, I missed her and the better thing no one and no one's bikes got hurt. This was on an open road. We both apologized to each other when I got stopped and turned around though it really was a just one of those things. Glad we missed each other.
