I recently retired and went shooting for the first time in quite a while. It was a slow day at the range and there was an older gentleman there shooting. He had 2 revolvers. I noticed that he threw away an empty box of 32 wadcutters as I was walking by. Anyway we got to talking and he told me he uses the 32 Wadcutters for not only practice, and he shoots it very well, but also for self defence if necessary. He says he has full confidence in his shooting ability and also in the round he shoots, the 32 Wadcutter.......

Basically a wad cutter makes a bigger wound than a pointy bullet. Obviously a hollow point if it expands makes a devastating wound, but if it doesn't expand it acts like a pointy bullet.

So the wad cutter may actually be the best choice especially for those who are recoil sensitive, and are shooting lower powered loads.

Edit: Congratulations on your retirement!

I've been hearing the same about WC's and I'm going to get two boxes of these to try and likely carry in my J-Frame

Thanks Eveled !! Yeah, 12/31/24 was my last day there.....Now to try to enjoy life a little bit more !!! This older gentleman was shooting an old H&R swing out cylinder and a gun that I really like and have too: a Ruger SSM in a 5 1/2 barrel. Both his guns were in great shape. I asked him if he ever shot the 32 Mag in his Ruger. He said back when he got it in the mid eighties, he had bought a couple of the old Federal 32 H&R 50 round boxes. He shot one box and still has the other box. Also, back in the 80's, he bought a ton of wadcutters from a gun shop going out of business. He has been shooting them all these years. He says he shoots only about once every month or so and shoots between 50 - 75 rounds or so when he goes. Seemed like a real nice guy and he is a pretty darn good shot !!

Beware of the man that shoots only one gun? Taken to the next level. Maybe not a lot of excitement when it comes to the spice of variety, but very learnable & predictable.

I might call that boring, but that's a reflection of me, not the practice. I sometimes admire folks that find something that works for them & looks no further. Just think of the simplicity. One bullet mold, one powder. 200 cases or 2000, but no other cartridges to keep up with or take your cash.

Obviously the practice intrigues me, as I am spoiled and can't go there as much as I've considered it.

Accuracy is everything...2 quotes that come to mind:
1. From the "Colonel"..."we could all carry 22's so long as we shot everyone in the eye"
2. From "Clint"...when he was once asked about the efficacy of 45- 230 gr hardball. "I carry hardball because I know they will always feed in my pistol...they may not be as effective as a JHP, but I'll just keep poking .45 cal holes in you till you quit being a threat"
A mild recoil load like those 32 wadcutters, placed accurately, can do a Lot of damage.

Like many folks, I shoot a lot of .38 wadcutters. These are also a favorite, for the reasons @eveled mentioned:

Several years ago there was conversation in the gun world about using wad cutters in cold weather for better penetration through heavy clothes.
As I recall it most of the experts agreed.
Some folks were loading WCs in the higher power levels for that very reason.

There's a gent on the 24 hour campfire forum that sells loaded .44 Russian 185 gr full wadcutters loaded at a modest velocity. They are reportedly very easy to handle in light weight 44 snubbies and as accurate as the shooter. With deep penetration and a big meplat no doubt they'd make wonderful SD loads.

Nothing new here, the lead bullet wadcutter in 32 or 38 calibers works well as a man stopper. The plus is less recoil if used at target loading levels. So, faster follow up shots if needed and maybe more into the target. They are a great choice for CCW holders using those wheel guns.
The downside is for cops, who may be shooting through a car door, glass, a wall or shootings where there maybe stuff between the cop and bad guy. That type of shootings the Jacketed higher velocity bullet normally is a better choice. LAPD streets cops carried 38 spl 158 gr SW lead bullets for many years.
