Energy Drinks

I'm in line at the gas station a day ago, and there's a young kid behind me with two armfuls of those 'energy drinks' waiting to check out.

Why does anyone under 30 even need an 'energy drink', especially in those quantities? :?

Like so many other products, it all comes from the marketing hype which convinces them they "need" it .........and it will make their life better.
Same thing as was done by the big tobacco companies back in the 1950's.

When I was a kid in the mid 1940`s my mom ran a country general store. I guess I didn't eat a heel on a sandwich. She then baited me and said the heels on a loaf of bread is what builds muscle. I sneaked back in the store and opened a half dozen loafs of bread and just ate the heels. Maybe that kid heard something similar.

I had a guy working for me the was always drinking Sparks energy drinks.
I ask him why he drank so much of it and he said it kept him going.
Then I read the ingredients and it said it had alcohol in it.
I told him he could no longer drink it at work.
He had a fit and quit shortly after.

Three of those helped me make a non-stop (except for gas) 13-hour drive home from Colorado once but by the time I got home I was shaking like an old guy with the paulsey. Never had one again.

I used to enjoy a Monster about once a day. Never felt it gave me energy but I enjoyed the taste. I quit drinking pop/soda over a month ago and quit them also. Stick to coffee and iced tea. The marketing hype has made this a million dollar + industry.

I drink a lot of coffee but those "energy drinks" scare me after some of the comments I've heard from my kids. I'm not afraid to just pull off the road and take a nap. Tom uses them occasionally to make those long trips home rather than stay in a hotel(even though it's on his company expense budget) and he doesn't think I should push that hard. Even "buzzing" with coffee and Mountain Dew, my judgement and motor skills probably aren't up to being in "full control".

Hi...
Never tried one...at 63 years old and retired, I doubt I ever will.
I worry that the additional caffeine would not be good for anybody's heart and would cause hand tremors.

My nephew (40y/o)..... according to his doctor, has totally ruined his heart and health with energy drinks. He is suffering from congestive heart failure, morbid obesity, and has sleep apnoea so bad he had a trach put in because he wouldn't wear a mask.....
He was using the drinks as meal replacement... and what food he did eat was probably so overly processed it was useless as food. Most male members of my family are borderline diabetic because of pop/soda, and poor diets.....
I haven't had a can of pop in..... I can't recall.... and I wouldn't touch an energy drink...

Probably a good thing they didn't have those when I was young. I was a 'speed freak'... Anything that got me cranked up was good. I'd eat no-doz like they were candy. I worked my butt off! Played hard and worked harder.

Poverty and the lack of fancy designer energy drinks probably saved my life when I was too young and stupid to understand I wasn't superman! ;)

I've never used those kind of drinks but being a non-coffee drinker I confess to using No Doze caffeine tabs when on long hauls OTR driving charter buses.

I have never tried any of the "energy drinks". I have drank coffee all my life from the times when I was so young I don't remember when I started. Coffee is not an energy drink for me. I drank coffee as a young boy for the reason my parents and the farmers I lived with boiled water to make it safe and made coffee with boiled water for every meal. I drink it now, as always, because I like it. In fact I drink coffee with every meal including supper, when I drink two or three cups of coffee every meal. It never stops me from sleeping every night.

I did learn one coffee problem. When I was just a very young boy, drinking coffee every meal with the adults, some the older men used to tell me, "Kid, drinking all that coffee will stunt your growth". They were right. I only grew to about 6 feet tall. I believe that had I not drank all that coffee when I was growing, I probably would have grown to 8 feet tall and become and NBA Star.

I’ve never tried one of those energy drinks either, I’ve heard they can cause health problems, not sure if that is true or not, but I don’t want to take the chance.

I have drunk enough coffee to float a battleship though. (And enough whiskey for a small sailboat... but that’s another story.)
