Early Super Blackhawk frames

I know that some early super blackhawk frames were 1/4" longer than standard, but I haven't seen what the standard was. I have #265 and am curious.

I don't know if you're talking about the "long frame supers" or not, but the regular SBH grip is about 3 1/4" in length.

I believe they are 3/16" longer & are refered to as the Long Frame Supers there were 300 made & are mixed into the serial # range up to the very early 3000 serial #'s.
I have serial # 207 & # 261 that are Long Frame Supers but I have serial # 225 that is Standard Frame Super Blackhawk.

Just to confirm, we are talking about the GRIP FRAME here, not the main frame.

When we say "longer" we are saying that the grip frame and its matching walnut panels are noticeably longer at the bottom than "normal" versions.

As I recall, most of these came in the now-rare mahogany display cases.

Looking at your dad's book, he shows Super Blackhawk #265 as having a regular Super Blackhawk grip frame. Take the grips off and if it is a "Long Grip Frame" Super then there will be a "C" stamped into the grip panels.

I want to thank everyone for the info. I just could never find out how long the "normal" grip frame would be. Now I have plenty to go on.

I am so gnerally ignorant about a lot of Ruger stuff. When I was a boy my dad rebuilt our attic. Half of it was for my brother and I, and half was for his collection of Springfields. By the time I had gone off to graduate school and then the army, his interests had shifted to Rugers. Like a lot of men my generation my relationship to my father was not always the best. In the last ten years of his life, we got along much better, but by then his collection was so large that I never learned much about it, and I missed my Springfields. I really appreciate everyone's being so generous with their time and knowledge. I'll be posting more questions and hope I don't become a pest.

Here is the basic sizes of Ruger's plow handle type grip frames from when they started in 1953 to the present. The 3" squares give you a visual of the sizes.

The actual "long frame supers" would be longer than the "Super Blackhawk" in the drawing.

I think I know of a certain forum member who really likes #265 guns. :shock:
