Doggie Diarrhea Cure?

My dog has developed a case of the runs. It's too cold to keep him outside so he's restricted to the kitchen that has a tile floor. Doing his business on the rugs in the house would be a nightmare. He tries to warn me to go outside but sometime it's too late.
Are there any home remedies available?

Watch him for dehydration, he can have pedalyte. You can give a dog Kaopectate, but body weight/dose I cannot advise you on.

Give him free picking of the kittyroca from the cat box. Every time my lab finds her way into the kittyroca, the clay seems to plug her right up for a day or 2. You would think she was giving birth to a bowling ball---all hunched up creeping around the yard trying to rid herself of a brick of cat litter.

Cook up some white rice in a big pot and feed it to the dog instead of dry dog food or canned dog food for a day or two until the stool is normal again. Make sure the water dish is full morning and night to prevent dehydration. If it persists, see a vet regardless. Black Dog

You didn't say how old he is, if he's a puppy or if there is any sign of blood call the vet now pups can get the parvo disease or what ever they call it, gives them the runs and dehydrates them and can be life threating if not treated right away.

If he's older keep an eye on him and let nature take it's course cleaning him out just keep him well watered, did you happen to change his food recently? that can cause runs.

If all else fails open a bottle of wine take the cork and plug the hole. :lol:

What size dog?
Our German short hairs (50-65lbs) we give them 1 Imodium about every 6hours.
Usually all they need is 2 doses.
Pepto bismal is also safe for dogs.

I've always used rice in my GSPs. Try cooking it in a little broth instead of water if they won't eat it.

A nice long walk will do wonders also if the poor pooch is up to it, it helps clear out what's left in the tank and better down the road some place than on your floor.

As a K9 officer for 8.5 years, we always gave two tbs heaping cottage cheese with or without food. Works in a couple hours with no chemical being taken. You can repeat every 8 hours if needed. This was for a 65lb +- dog. They also loved the flavor. Nothing worse than the partner in the back seat having the runs.

RonT: How long has this been going on? This is the most important question. More then 2 days then she/he needs to see a vet.. You did not mention age and you didn't mention diet. Do you give treats? There are some horrible treats going around, bad stuff. I have been a dog person for years and am always watchful for changes in bowel movements. Dogs are resilient but they are susceptible to some stomach/intestinal problems. Keep the diet fairly even, don't change it up a lot. I disagree with the rice due to dehydration, it can dehydrate a dog even worse. Same with oat based products.

I will get on a bandwagon here for just a second. Most of the crap you buy at walmart (no capitols for effect) is horrible for your dog. You have a computer, if you love your pet, research dog food. Please. Feed your dog the same quality as what you eat. Just take 10 minutes and discover the crap you are feeding your best friend. We spend a little more but get quality food for them.

P.S. What got us to wondering was, we saw our dogs eating the horse/mule/donkey poop. Why? They weren't getting the proper diet. Just a thought for the future.

In answer to some things omitted in the original post:
He's 10 years old.
No blood or worms in stool
No change in behavior, frisky as usual
No change in food or appetite, no treats
His nose is cold, no fever
This is day 2 of the condition
I did notice a few days ago he was doing a lot of sneezing
He drinks water as usual
I think I'll try to whip up a batch of white rice and see if that works.

My wife, (vet tech with college degree) concurs on the rice and pepto bismol. Thats what out border collies get when needed. Seems to work.

Gave him a serving of white rice and sprinkled the contends of one of my probiotic capsules on the rice Saturday and Sunday. This morning "things" seem to be back to normal. Keeping my fingers crossed that "things" continue to be normal. :D
I'm sure the other remedies suggested work also but white rice is all I had in the pantry.

Glad to hear he's back up and running as usual sounds like that fix a leak sealed him up or more than likely after two days nature took it course and what ever caused it was finally flushed out, that's good news. :D
