The recent rant about cats made me decide to make a post about dogs.

My apologies to the dog owners out there.

Dogs can be stupid. A dog goes after a skunk, gets sprayed, and doesn't learn his lesson. He'll do it again. Same with porcupines.
Dogs like to dog holes all over yards, flower beds, gardens etc.
Dogs require walking to allow them to do their "business."
Dogs will crap all over the place & not cover it up.
Dogs can bark constantly, for no apparent reason.
Dogs mark everything with urine.
Dogs will roll in rotten smelly stuff & then climb on you.
Dogs will jump up on you, sometimes knocking people down causing injury.
Dogs bite.
And dogs have killed people.

And in my job, I have to interact with people at their homes. I have a taser to scare off aggressive dogs to prevent injury to me. I have been bitten by a "pet" that snuck up behind me while I was trying to work. The owner failed to acknowledge the dogs aggression.


So, we can see that dogs can be bad. More importantly, dogs cause more human injuries & even death than cats. Yet, people attack cats as evil, vile creatures. I see a very one sided prejudice.

Do not get me wrong. I have owned dogs in my past,, but currently do not. I've owned German Shepherds, Cocker Spaniels, and some mixed breeds. I do not hate them. In fact,, ANY pet,, can be good, loving & a lot of fun.

I just think the prejudiced hatred of cats is often too much to accept. Many cats are super sweet, loving, and wonderful pets, just as dogs can be. Let's give the cats a break.
 
I don't want to get into the "pet parent" discussion since I/we have never had or allowed "animals" in the house. Living on the farm, we always had dogs and cats. Dad was NOT a "cat fan" but as long as the cats stayed at the barn, we got along pretty well.
Dad was a "hound man", therefore, we often had anywhere from 4 to 10 hounds on stake out chains around the homestead. I kept 2 or 3 hounds until we quit coyote hunting with dogs and those were given away or just lived out their lives here. I had bird dogs for decades but those, too were kept on stake out chains or pens rather than run loose.
We now have a couple of "barn dogs"(a day dog and a night dog) that run loose during their appointed duty cycle. The Grandkids play with them a little but I only pet them when switching their inside/outside pen cycle. I don't consider them "pets" as they have a job and are here to do that job.
Both of these dogs are "finger trained" meaning I catch their eye and point to where I expect them to go or be and they respond. Our livestock guard dogs accept me as the "ALPHA" and are trained to assume a submissive posture when I'm present. A fairly significant gesture as both are 100#+ animals.
As a retired USPS employee and current employment involves visiting a variety of farms, homes, etc, I've met and meet lots of dogs. So far, I only been bitten once but it's been close several times. This may be simply luck or some of that "Alpha" presence is perceived by even the strange dogs.
 
My view of cats(tasty) is not prejudiced. It is “post” judged. I formed my opinion by experience, not others views. I currently belong to two pound rescue pit bulls. Sweetest dogs we’ve ever had. JMHO To each their own. (Just kidding about the taste. :mrgreen:

But he still thinks dogs are stupid. Dogs are not stupid but are very smart and did a good job in doing what it took to survive as a species for tens of thousands of years. :)
 
The gun club I belonged to in CO had/has a "North" range that you access by
traversing the property of a neighbor. The neighbor runs cattle for parts of the
year, thus you have to open and close the gates (real yawner huh?). The problem
comes in when their dog is running free, outside. He is a real sneaky bugger and,
if you watch him, will leave you alone.

The problem comes when you turn your back to him, say to open the gate. He
will hit you in a half second, with a major bite somewhere between the ankle
and knee. He manages to draw blood most times.

The only solution (for the first year or two) was to go there in pairs. One person
watches the critter and the other opens the gate, moves the vehicle in, and then
watches the dog while the second person gets in to the car.

The final solution was to take pictures, and pictures, and write many a complaint
with the Sheriff's Office. Initially, the Sheriff would do nothing, since the dog was
on the owner's property. The owner finally agreed to chain/leash the dog when
club members were going to the range. He also decided to run his cattle
elsewhere so there was no need to open/close the gate.

Dogs can be quite nice, or can be a pain in the posterior.
GEE! Just like people. :roll:

Many years ago my job was treating old utility poles for groundline decay all over the country. We were in backyards, farm yards, city, wherever there are power and telephone poles. Dogs were a daily hazzard. My average crew were 4 of us. I hired a guy who was scared of dogs. They knew it. They would run past the rest of us to go try and nail him maybe standing a 100 yards away. I watched the difference. He would see a dog and stiffen right up. All the rest of us would act like we were happy to see the dogs.
 
Having had both cats and dogs, I have to say that I am partial to cats. I will NOT stake an animal out chained to a post. I feel that to be inhuman. Where I live there is a 'leash' law. If you own a dog you must walk him on a leash. You must also scoop up his/her droppings. I feel that if you have a dog he should be free to roam, thus I will not have one. On the other hand my cat is presently lounging on a chair on the porch. When he needs to 'go' and is outside he goes to the back of the property, digs a hole, uses it, then covers it up. If in the house, and nature calls, he uses his litter box.
If I have a dog, and plan to be away for a couple days I would need someone to check on it, feed and water, and if in the house, take it for a walk.
Since I have a cat and I leave for a couple days I fill a big bowl with dry food, set out a large container of water, new litter in the pan and leave. I know that, unlike a dog, he will not eat the food just because it is there. I also know the house will be in the same condition as when I left.
 
I like cats but I'm a real dog person. At one time I had a house dog and 4 coon hounds. I'm not sure why I grew up to be a dog lover because when I was somewhere around 5 years old my parents got me my first dog and while introducing me to my first dog that damned dog bit me on the face. My first dog didn't last long. :)
 
A well balanced home will have both cats and dogs as well as birds and maybe some tropical or Goldfish. :D :D

It's the people that cause trouble. :mrgreen:
 
We have two dogs and one cat. Blizzard is 5 years old and couldn’t be more gentle and kind. Rainy is 1 & 1/2. She is also kind, but not as “wise” as Blizzard. Around our house we like to say she is extremely “gullible.”

Honestly, I think it’s the cat who helped craft each dog’s personality. When we got Blizzard, we had Nixon The Cat. He was mean as anything and he stood his ground and rightfully put Blizzard in his place. As stubborn as he was, Nixon finally died on us.

Then we got Berry The Cat, she is more afraid of dogs and is basically a wimp of a cat. When we brought Rainy home (Blizzards half sister actually,) Berry let Rainy chase her and didn’t put up a fight.

Now no animal in our house has nor would bite anyone. I have to agree with Contender, and also agree it’s the dog owner’s....not the dogs themselves.

I do like all the dog stories here.... :D
 
Heard of a kid who ran off most of the day. Finally he came home and was surprised that no one said anything to him but ignored him. Finally he broke the silence and said "Well ma, I see you got the same old cat!"

My cat,Slick, comes in from an outside trip and, no matter where I am in the house, he finds me and announces his presence. He is also a conversationalist. I talk to him and he answers. Linda says that he is amazing. As long as I talk to him he will answer me. Cats are not nearly as stupid as some like to say. They are just 'independent'. Unlike a dog, you can't MAKE a cat do anything it doesn't want to, except possibly going to the vet.
 
After reading this rant I just couldn't help myself and had to put a little word spin on it by thinking about my chickens and how much of a PITA they can be sometimes.

Chickens can be really intelligent and seem to be friends with both skunks and porcupines. :roll:

Dogs like to dig holes all over yards, flower beds, gardens etc.
Chickens will scratch and dig where ever they feel like doing it. :lol:

Dogs require walking to allow them to do their "business."
Chickens just poop where ever they happen to be standing or sitting at the time. :mrgreen:

Chickens do lots of quiet clucking when everything is safe, but they make a real racket when danger is anywhere near.

Chickens like to roll in the dust but I have never had one try to climb on me. :lol:

Dogs will jump up on you, sometimes knocking people down causing injury.
A rooster can get a bit rowdy if you are threatening his girls, but only if you get caught bare foot with no boots or sturdy shoes on, or lacking a big stick in your hand do they cause any real problems. :shock:

Dogs bite.
Chickens can bite, but a quick smack with a backhand usually ends the problem pretty quickly. :wink:

And dogs have killed people.
Chickens can make you sick or kill people, but safe food handling usually solves this problem. :)


Any pet, can be good, loving & a lot of fun.

I just think the prejudiced hatred of chickens is often too much to accept. Many chickens are super sweet, loving, and wonderful pets, just as dogs can be. Let's give them both a break.

I figured I'd get bashed pretty good by dog owners. I'm pleasantly surprised by the comments. Of course,, the IS the Ruger Forum,, which is well known for it's open minded civility towards others for the most part.

I do NOT hate dogs,,, as noted,, please read my post carefully. I have owned them,, and can HONESTLY say it could happen again. I let God decide what needs my love & home. My last dog was a BEAUTIFUL Redbone hound I rescued after it got hit by a car. He wasn't used as a hunting dog,,, just my wonderful loveable hound with the sweet voice only a hound like that can have.

As for my comment about them being stupid. Read my examples. Many times they fail to learn a lesson that can hurt them. In my business,, I often hear about dogs getting snake bit by their repeated assaults to the front of a snake.
I also know that there are MANY, MANY well trained dogs & many do a wonderful service as working animals. My son was a K-9 Officer with a tracker dog for a few years. His dog was an excellent tracker.
So,, I repeat,, I'm NOT a dog hater,, but obviously I struck a nerve by defending cats with a post about the negative aspects of dogs.

I will also add that often it IS the PEOPLE as it was pointed out that can be the biggest problem.

So,, my point is this;
Dogs AND cats are both animals God gave us to be both companions, pets, protectors, working animals, & most of all,,, love. We, as humans often accept the shortcomings of our preferred pet,, as part of the price we pay for such love & loyalty. But to constantly see cats vilified,, well, I hope this post can make a few folks understand that cats can be just as good as dogs as pets. And, hopefully, accept them as such.

Well, as a long time owner of cats,, I can say they they CAN be your best friend.
Greet me when I come home. (Currently have one that rolls over & expects a belly rub.) Others can't wait until we sit down to get in our lap. ALL expect petting and affection. (Sounds just like a dog.)

At night, bedtime,, they sleep on the bed,, and one even expects to lay down with her head in Miss Penny's hand.

And if you don't think they can be your best friend,, we had one, who, 19 years ago,, climbed into Miss Penny's lap, (I was gone,) cried & wiggled a lot. Turns out,, she was a young mother to be. We thought she was younger than she was. She had her one & only kitten, physically in Miss Penny's lap. How's that for loving & trust as your best friend? That kitten grew into a fine cat,, who always had "2 momma's,". He lived for 17+ years, and chose to climb into Miss Penny's arms to pass away. (Dogs prefer to go off to die.)
Sorry,, you'll never sell the man's best friend argument to us.

Cats AND dogs will give back what they receive. Give love, affection & you will get it back ten fold. Many think cats are aloof, distant, or whatever. A cat in my opinion prefers to step back, & see what kind of person you are before it chooses to be affectionate. Just cautious about people.

And let's not forget the reverence cats had in ancient times. When rats were a problem, causing the plague, cats were brought in, and killed rats. Diseases slowed way down.

AGAIN,,,,,,,,,,,, my point is that cats are just as good as dogs & BOTH deserve love & respect.

But I guess some people may be like some of the rabid anti-gunners. A closed mind, unwilling to study & educate themselves about a subject they have already formed an opinion about.
 
A friend of mine was in the midst of a divorce and they were arguing over who gets what property. Both wanted the family dog and both wouldn't budge from their demand. As it turns out, they decided to stay married so both could have the dog. That was years ago and they are still together. :)

My dog learns quick... the only problem is he does not mind smelling like a skunk. At least the one time he got sprayed he was happier than a pig in slop...

It's cooler down there and dirt smells good... makes it hard for prey to smell them.

What's wrong with walking... I've heard it's good for you and there's not much better than walking with a dog.

My experience is they are always barking for a reason it's just that we don't have the sense to know what it is.

As you know I go to folks houses too... very seldom do I have a problem with a dog.... I used to carry one of these electronic alarm things that put out a screeching loud sound that only dogs could here but I only used it once.. and then forgot about it.

I like cats too, but the most scared I have ever been from a customer's pet was actually a big tom cat.....

Some folks just don't like animals, I know you do.... I suspect you have more troubles in your work with what you have to do. I have been bitten more than once... the last time was my own fault ... I stuck my hand out to see if this super aggressive dog which was on a leash being held back by its owner would actually bite me... I bled for 4 days... not exaggerating... but at least it cleaned the wound out. it is hard to wrap my head around not liking critters and especially dogs... I had a Basset puppy playing in my lap at a customer's house on Wednesday and it made my week.

I hated cats. Used to shoot feral cats when seen. Owned 2 retrievers, trained them, shared life with them. Then I got married. Knew I lost when we got a mixed breed siamese cat. She lived to 22 YO. The next was a seal point crossed with a chocolate. She lived to 16. Now we have a chocolate mixed with a balinese. The first year or so can be interesting, but they all are unique individuals, and you need to adapt to them. :mrgreen:
 
We always had dogs & cats around growing up. Between my sisters & I we went through some pets. We have a dog & two cats here now that are the kids pets. My old dog died last year. He was 17 years old. The worst thing about dogs & cats is that they are pretty much grief waiting to happen.
 
I knew my post would garner a lot of responses.

As I said,, I'm NOT a dog hater,, as I have owned several over the years. But currently,, I don't own any,, but welcome them as faithful companions. I just wanted to point out some things they do that cause some folks to "rant" about them,, all while defending the differences a cat. Basically, cats get a bad rap,, and often seem to bring out pure evil in some folks.

And one thing that is so true about either one. Once they care for you,, you will get love & affection so readily, so genuine, that it's hard to NOT love them. And sadly,, their lifespan is way too short as compared to ours. With a pet, be it dog or cat,, when you get your first one,, you give it your heart. When it dies,, a piece of your heart goes with it. And when you get another one,, it gives you a piece of their heart. When it dies,, part of your heart goes with it. If you live long enough,,, you will have the heart of a pet that is loving, generous, and happy. May I die with the heart of all my pets,, both dogs & cats.
