The ammo companies have been telling us that they are making .22LR at their usual rate of a bazzillion rounds per day........They told us that the "shortage" is due to hoarders... :roll: Well, NOW THAT THE PRICE HAS MORE THAN DOUBLED, the "shortage" is miraculously over. I was at Cabela's in Hartford, Ct two days ago and the shelves were literally overflowing with all brands of .22LR. Of course the price is now $37 - $40+ per brick of 500 and more for the smaller 'bricks' or boxes of 100. Does ANYONE believe the ammo companies, or even our illustrious gun scribes, who have sworn to us for the past several years that the ammo production has not been slowed/stopped to create the shortage..............???? (If so, I have a presidential candidate for you to vote for.)

There is absolutely no .22 ammo in this area.
None, zero, zilch, nada.
The last time I bought .22's was about 8 months ago and it was because
I stumbled on to the clerk unboxing a new shipment as I walked up.
He never got to put it on the shelves.
Between me and 4 other customers buying the allowed 3 bricks it was gone in a minute.

Some stores are getting more of it than others. Cabelas does have a fair stocking,, witnessed by myself yesterday.
Yet,,, overall, where I USED to see a lot of Federal, Winchester, Remington, & CCI,,, the stock of those brands was very, very limited. And yes, at Cabelas, the prices were a lot more than what was "normal" just a few years ago. I did see a lot of "odd" names of ammo, and those prices were not much better than the normal name brand stuff.
Yet, at discount places like wally world, they rarely have any, and when they do, it doesn't last. The pricing there doesn't reflect the same percentage of increases that I see in other places.
But I did notice that Cabelas had some powder & a very limited amount of primers for reloading too.
Things are not "back to normal" yet. At least not in my area.

Dick's just ran a buy one get one sale on all .22lr 525 packs or less, I bought some and they still have plenty on the shelf. I paid 3 1/2 cents per round, FWIW.

With the political situation the way it is in this country, the way it is now is the new norm. I shoot very little .22 ammo any more so I have more than a lifetime supply on hand right now with two crates that I can barely lift. Watch the big online dealers daily and be prepared to pay for it.

In my area (with only three places selling ammo) all the .22 LR that comes in is gone the same day it goes on the shelves. Dunno the prices as I'm usually late for the rush, and have good stash anyway (I know one guy that stops by one of the stores at lunch every day and asks for .22s. If there are any available he makes a couple phone calls and most is gone by the time he gets off work). So, who's to "blame"...

I stopped into the local Sportsmandps Whs. This morning. They used to keep what powder they had in the back room. Now the display shelves were well stocked and lots of primers of all flavors on the shelf also. I did not check on .22's because I have plenty. Six months from now,who knows, you all might be wining about the shortage again. Get em while they are hot !!!

I believe the manufactures did try to increase production to meet demand but being as how expanding production is rather expensive I doubt that any invested much in increased production machinery. They probably knew that demand would level off eventually. They probably increased pricing to meet increased demand and material costs and maybe a little more. If the market becomes glutted with ammo I bet you will see discounts again. I don't think there is any big conspiracy on anybody's part, just some market fluctuations and some sporadic and panic buying at times.

This right here...........Myself, I used to never keep more than a brick or two on hand because it was easy to pick up a brick whenever you needed it. Now I have over 10,000 rounds and hardly even shoot 22LR. I am sure I am not the only one who has done this and I also expect my "stash" is fairly small as compared to lots of others.mhblaw said:

I have a cousin who works in a Remington ammo plant and he also works on the 22LR line. He says that line has run wide open 24/7 for several years now and there are currently no plans to scale it back. Wal Mart and such places order millions of rounds, but they have so many stores, none get a lot and it doesn't sit long enough for the stores to build inventory

I've bought two cases of 5M rounds of 22LR ammunition in the past two months. I'll buy ten more one of these days given the chance. Hoarding...HELL NO!!! Sometimes I burn up a case a week and have been know to shoot up a case in a day.

I wonder if Homeland Security is still buying up all of the 22 ammo. Maybe if Trump gets elected, that will stop. I know that I'd sure like to see 22LR on the shelf again at Wally World.

Believe me or not, but here in North east Ohio their was never a real shortage ever.
Now the price did go up. The cheapest is around .07/.08 a round. And the 3 places I was able to buy them limited you to 200 rounds or one value pac per visit. But that has since been eliminated and you can buy all you want. And the same was for powders and primers, not really a shortage.
And I haven seen a 22 in a Walmart by me in 7 or 8 yrs. all my purchases have basically been from two one store franchises and a couple multi stores franchises.
I have no idea how they kept they're shelves stocked but they did.
At one time I probably had 30,000 22's. saved. Over the past 5yrs I've sold 15,000 of them, for basically what I paid for them. And the only reason I sold them was to buy a couple rifles I wanted.
Say what you want but I don't consider what I was able to do hoarding.
Every time I went to those shops (which was a 20min or 30min drive depending on the shop) and was able to buy 200 rounds or a value pac I did. And 99.9% of you would have done the same. Hell I probably even lost money when I sold 1/2 of what I had if you figure in time and gas.

Yeah. I bought a LOT of the Walmart bulk ammo when it was around 2c a round. Less as it got closer to 3c. If/when things ever get back to something approaching "normal," I think the "Walmart price" of the very cheapest bulk stuff will be somewhere in the 4c-5c a round ballpark.DGW1949 said:

I kinda always stayed stocked up. Buying in bulk to reduce the price. After I started loading the 32 calibers I've not used any 22's except in a lever gun. If someone would come out with a lever 327 I'd probably never shoot 22's again. i've got dust collecting on several thousand rounds of 22LR and 22Mag, but when I can shoot 327 for 2 cents a round why shoot the more expensive 22's?

The shooting range I go to has all the .22LR you'd care to buy. They've probably got 50K or more out on the counter every time I go in. It's mostly Aguila, but they have Mini Mags from time to time also and they're not flying off the shelves at all.
