Do you like Spam?

I happen to like Spam, and the Walmart equivalent which is a little cheaper. Honestly though, both are kind of expensive compared to a slice of Primrose brand fully cooked ham from Save-A-Lot. Skillet-heated Spam on toast with mayo and a slice of tomato are wonderful and quite the summertime treat at our house. Don

It is one of the "keeps forever" staples for the camp shelves (along with a variety of Dinty Moore Chicken and Dumplings and beef stew, hearty Campbells soups and chili, all of which I love. Occasionally I find the Jalapeno, Bacon or cheesey spam, all of which I think is a great improvement. I don't think it is probably any worse for breakfast than a ration of bacon with eggs fried in the grease...best way they come!

Contrary to popular belief Spam can go bad. Usually the can leaks and oxygen gets in. But check it carefully if it's been around while.

One of my best friend's father served in the Pacific theater during WWII. He was mostly assigned to construction projects, but spent a lot of time recovering the dead after the fighting stopped. I can recall him making faces when he smelled Spam or something that smelled similar. For him, the smell was associated with the smell of the dead. He was a great man and I miss him.

I can eat it, sliced thin and fried. Not my favorite. I tried a store-brand variety, then composed this (with a nod to Dr. Seuss):

I do not like generic Spam.
I do not like it, Sam-I-Am.
Sliced thin and fried, this mystery meat
Is not what I would call a treat.
Disliking it is not my fault;
The overwhelming taste is salt.
Perhaps half meat, the rest is fat.
It may be pork, it may be rat.
The nitrate content in the can
Would fertilize an acre of land.
I do not like generic Spam. I do not like it, Sam-I-Am.

While I've never tried it, some folks down in Georgia tell me blackbird pie is just as good as robin pie.

I always keep a couple of cans around. I usually use it for fried Spam and egg sandwiches, or diced and added to an omelette or scrambled eggs. Cheap, quick and as a bachelor I can usually get a couple of meals out of a single can.

We keep some cans, fried spam and eggs, fried spam sandwhiches, diced spam in cheese eggs. Pretty quick and easy meal when you don't want or have as much time to prepare!

Spam is one of the few store bought products that are a staple in my diet, the other is peanut butter.
I'll eat it any way I can get it, I even keep an emergency can in my truck.
My favorite is right out of the can.

If there's a better food to take with on a hunting trip, I don't know what it is. I wouldn't want to eat it every day, but boy it tastes good in a tent!

Had my 15 year old grandson over the other day. He noticed the cans of Spam in the cupboard, so we popped one open and fried it up. It was edible. He liked it, but he eats anything.
