Nita's uncle was in the Third Infantry Division and landed at Anzio. Anzio was a good example of how not to run an amphibious invasion. Her uncle left a write-up of his experiences at Anzio and it was found among his things after his death. I have transcribed it from his handwritten pages. I noticed this entry:

Of course we had to eat C-Rations out of a can part of the time and K-Rations some times and they were in cardboard boxes and they had some hard chocolate bars and a few things like that. And we had a lot of Spam The cooks would try to fix the Spam sometimes so it would taste better, such as chicken fried Spam. I don’t like Spam to this day.

He was on the beach and shelled by the big railways guns, Anzio Annie and Anzio Express.

There's worse "stuff" that some folks relish. I can take it or not but if it's what's on the plate, I don't complain. I've been offered a meal at places where SPAM was all they had or could afford. and I was darned glad to have what was offered.
BTW
Dad participated in the ANZIO "invasion", had his LST bombed from under him, and spent some extremely unpleasant time there.

My Dad spent all 4 years in WWII and said they ate Spam a lot.
We didn't have lots of money when I was a kid and we ate spam a lot also.
I still eat spam and there is always several cans of it in the pantry.

Another exert from the same write-up:

We had several ships in our convoy and we had a barage (sic) balloon tied to each ship with a steel cable and the balloon was probably about 1000 feet high or more. That was to keep the German planes from getting in too low. If they got too low they would hit the steel cables.

On the 22 Jan 1944 our front line troops landed about 3:00 a.m. and they didn’t have many casualties for they surprised the Germans. But we landed about nine o’clock a.m. and the Germans knew what was happening so they would fly in and shoot the balloons down first so they could drop their bombs on us. A bomb landed on each side of our ship and it looked like the water went 100 ft. in the air. I looked behind us and one ship was burning and another one was (unreadable) on its end sinking.

I like Spam.

I cut little slivers, put it on a cracker with a little squirt of pressurized cheese, and it's a pretty good treat.

Almost as wonderful as the looks of the spoiled kids that turn their nose up when I offer it to them.

When I was a youngster, when my Dad got sick and could no longer work, we received what we called welfare food. And the centerpiece was some kind of chopped ham loaf. I learned early not to judge a gift horse.

Even more wonderful, Wayne, is that you don't have to share...…. ;)

Make that 3 Army vets and at times when in my youth and Dad was in the Navy and stationed on Ford Island that was a regular part of dinner and MUCH better than milk that had been frozen and transported on Navy ships thanks to the Port Unions being on strike. I've got several cans of spam in the pantry.

My 1 year old granddaughter loves spam. She picks up slices cut in half and gnaws it off with her front teeth and chews it best she can with a molar or two in the back. It turns out my daughter likes fried spam and gave some to the baby once and now it’s one of her favorite foods.

I eat a fair amount of spam....sliced thin....and crisp like bacon....and for those that try it different ways.....I can tell you...it will not grill.....when I tried grilling spam.....it caught fire...and jets of flame were shooting out of it like rocket fuel....so in a pinch.....you can break off a piece of spam...to use as a fuel source....to pan fry the remaining spam...

I like Spam; but I didn’t have to survive on it in WW2.
Like several of you, I keep some around as emergency supplies.

I saw a movie with Slim Pickens, who had crash landed in the Arctic. When found, food was dropped to them. They were throwing the spam back at them. Several years ago I tried some, it tasted OK, but noticed it was 90% fat! HEART ATTACK IN A CAN for us old folk. High test fuel for the young!

I would have SPAM occasionally as a kid, liked it just fine. A few years ago I realized that I had not had any in a few decades so I bought some. Strange, I didn't like it as much as I remembered. I could use it as survival rations but there are too many other foods I like better on a day to day basis.

Growing up, Spam was cheap. Not now. I liked it then, still do. Always have some in the pantry.

I haven't had any spam in a while. I like it okay it just isn't something we usually eat. It is much better when fried.

Sometimes my wife will fix some fried potatoes, greens, cornbread and Spam. A dinner fit for a not so rich king. I like the low sodium Spam the best.
