Do You Carry Inside Your Home?

I used to think inside the house if I had firearm handy that was good enough and never carried doing yard work...except for a knife, and that only for general cutting purposes, rope, string, whatever, not self defense.

Recently, I've read of so many home invasions on the rise, the policy of having a firearm close by no longer does it for me. I carry even inside the house and darn sure when doing yard work.

I previously read about folks doing this and thought too much. Unnecessary. No longer...

What about you?
 
Depends. If I am dressed for the day's business, yes. If I am relaxing in sweats for the evening, no. Firearms are rarely out of reach inside the home. Always within reach outside the home.

I live in the boonies. Isolation can be both an advantage and a liability. I try to be prepared and aware.
 
Much of the time...I have a little something always close at hand in the garage when I'm working out there...got to be careful here...I'm close enough to a school that I'm ok if on my own property but if I went next door or out in the street or away from home at all...I'd be in serious violation....we have no kids around so I may not have a pistol in my pocket all the time but there are several close by at all times...we have a security door that lets us see out but folks can't see in..we don't open the door for anyone except friends or family or someone we have invited....we are close enough to the border we keep a pretty strong awareness of what is what.

Yes, I have done it, I just dropped a pistol into my front pocket, and kept it there for a few hours. And I have done it a few times, not just once.
A .357 or a 9mm feels good in my pocket too, it is not a burden.
 
Almost the same as Wolfsong. Except I am retired. Always one close to the bed, one in a drawer. Never physically pack in or around the house, do have one on me or in my vehicle every time we leave the house. I have had a few events many years ago. I live in a much safer area retired than I did in my working years. Personally I think its ridiculous to hear that people need to physically keep a gun on them in their house. I carried on my job for over 35 years and never enjoyed the weight and discomfort of packing up to 16 hours a day working double shifts etc. One in a handy drawer should be sufficient unless you or your kid is mixed up in drug`s and have stiffed your pusher. If there was a novelty to packing on the job I am sure it wore off the first week or two when I first started working fifty years ago. I have a s&w model 40 and a Sig 238. Both are supposedly light pocket type guns and even those I find annoying to pack.

...and I always thought so too, until a man I know (lives about a mile away and we all live in the country. Heck, the road to his house is visible off the main road and is located roughly more than an 1/8th and less than 1/4 mile off the main road before you get to his house)

He's the one who really convinced to start carrying while home inside.

Why?

He was home invaded. Said he has guns all over the house, but once the invasion occurred it happened boom, now, no waiting. Have a gun in hand now or you're toast. Luckily for he and his wife, these monsters only stole from him rather than beat/torture or kill.

Inside I wear a shoulder rig with a fully loaded spare magazine. I can put my pistol in hand super quick!

Too much bother?

Maybe...maybe not...

An English teacher of mine years ago made an unoriginal, but still bright observation: "A smart man learns from experience...a wise man learns from the other guy's experience" or something along those lines...
 
A very timely question!

Yesterday while walking the dog my neighbor behind me told me his encounter with a couple
of no counts in a truck.
He was in his driveway when they pull up and one of them says to the other "I think we can take him".

My neighbor in his 70's only few feet away reaches behind for his holstered Glock 32 .357 Sig.
and they pull off only to circle the block once more to stare him down before driving off again.

Now we live in a typical peaceful middle class subdivision but still you never know.

So yes I carry when out walking or out in the yard or shop!

No excuses. In VN, it was common to see a guy headed to the field shower wearing nothing but boots and his 1911 on a web belt. Or a M14 slung on his shoulder. Or both. :)
 
Ok, but it's perfectly legal to carry inside your home and on your property.

What am I overlooking or not understanding.?

This thread isn't about legal or illegal. It's about personal circumstances and preferences. :)
 
In the house, with the doors always locked my SR9c is handy Dandy and quickly reached. Out in public its either stuck in a IWB holster of with my jeans, in the front pocket; There are several other varieties of pistols around here and there in the house.
No Problems, No Kids.

War story time. As most of us, my lifestyle has changed with age. First story. I had a job as a foreman on a tough job where I hired guys for minimum wages. The average job was about two months and off again to a new area. I hired and worked with many rough guys on a temporary basis. This was fifty five years ago. I got involved with a guys girlfriend. I also had to fire his best friend at the same time. Supposedly the guy was hooked up with somehow the Mafia. Might have been BS to impress me but who knows? The guy I fired plus the ex boyfriend I had found out about a lot of dirty illegal stuff. Before that we had even went shooting together so they knew I had a handgun.
A common friend of his tipped me the pair were out to hurt or kill me. I was wrapping up that job and was pressured by the company to leave but my new girl friend was a drama queen and had checked herself in the hospital so I felt I needed to stay a extra day or two. I had that once in a lifetime premonition that actually worked out. I was renting a old cheap dump 2nd story apartment over a music store. The back door was in the kitchen and opened to a rusty ancient fire escape. A window from that looked into the tiny bedroom. I seen you could see the bed so moved the bed to keep from getting shot through the window. They knew I had a revolver but they didn't know I also had a pump 12 gauge. In those days the revolver was a .22 win mag single six. My more serious guns came after that. I UNLOADED the single six and laid it in plain sight on a dresser in the so called living room. The small closet was in the living room. I opened the door to that and stuck the loaded shotgun between the open closet door and the wall. I came home from work on my last day on the job. I needed to use the john. While on the throne I though I heard a slight sound. I came out of the can and both were in my apartment. They had come up the fire escape and carded their way in through the cheap door. They had armed themselves with empty 24 oz coke bottles I had left out. The smaller guy I had fired did take a swing or two at me but me being taller and long armed I jabbed him off. The ex boy friend was a 6ft 4" Italian was a little wearier of me. I figured my best chance was to get them to see the gun and go for it and I bad mouthed them and worked my way to the closet. It was the deal where I talked rougher than I was. We had a short rough conversation and they left. Had I not had that shotgun in arms reach I might have got killed or jailed 55 years ago.
They never did see the shotgun. God saved me that time and quite a few more. Point is just being armed can give you the confidence to get you through some difficult times without your antagonizers knowing you are armed although I believe the bad ones like her ex can smell it. The trouble is the dumb ones cant.
I have had several more somewhat similar occasions after that one many years ago. Now I am a fat, weak 77 year old man. I still dont worry about anyone though and don't feel I need to pack on my body in my house. I will sig my 6 ft 17 year younger wife on em.
 
I rarely have a gun on me in my house, several are readily available. I understand those that do carry in the home and support their choice. The decision to carry in the home is not ridiculous and in some areas is prudent. We each have to assess our risk.
 
For me it is about 95% of the time. When not carrying in the house there is one next to my chair always one in BR. If one of us goes to basement there are a couple to chose from.
