I can proudly say that I got the promotion I've been chasing for 2 years. Now, the challenge. I'd expected a fairly smooth transition into the job but that doesn't seem to be the case. The reality is more like a calf being born in a snowdrift- I THOUGHT I was ready for this but not quite with such a sudden shock.
I got a call about noon yesterday asking if I could be in the "state office" today as early as I could manage. The guy says "it's a 2 hour drive , right?". Well, on a good day starting with a full gas tank and thermos and catching green lights in the bigger towns, it's still over 2 hours. With today's rain/wind storm and my conservative attitude about driving on wet pavement, it's going to be over 2.5 hours.
I'm going to get soaked doing chores in the dark to make it by 9:30-10:00. I guess that's a head start on taking a shower?

Sounds like the stories my uncle would tell from when he worked at Inland Steel. You my friend, if you will do me the honor of allowing me to call you my friend, are one of those rare birds that actually take pride in making your own way and working for a living. In a time and place where people sit and complain they can't make it on minimum wage. You have the drive and fortitude to develop the skills to be worth more than minimum wage. You sir are a man in a nation full of overgrown children. And you have my sincere and utter respect. While it doesn't mean as much from me as it would my uncle – you sound like a man I would be proud to have as a neighbor.

Driving in Missouri frustrates me if I-70 has to be involved. I have witnessed a couple of really bad wrecks happen back when I had to commute to Ft Leonardwood and Columbia and St. Louis for jobs and literally saw some sort of trashed vehicles carnage every singe trip. One day in west St. Louis, I got caught up in a pack of "Squids" as I call rice rocket riders. About 50 in a big pack. They were doing 80mph wheelies. One kid on a red Ducati about took off my rear view mirror on and left red paint on my white pickup all the way down the right side. I bet he crapped his pants. I thought his helmet hit the mirror.
For whatever reason, every time I go on I-70 there also is either huge construction backups or bad weather.

Selena, I do thank you for that.
I made the 12 hour round trip w/o incident. Spent 6 hours trying to follow the flow of the computer work but found this to be the least intuitive of anything I've experienced. Maybe after a night's rest I'll be able to move through the steps. If not, I'll have to take another day class.
Lots of work coming up over the next 40 days.
I did catch a glimpse of my predecessor's 2018 gross pay but couldn't replicate the keystrokes to get back to that page. If that glimpse was correct, I underestimated the pay for the position by 50%. In other words, what I'd considered might be a 25-30% pay increase may end up being a 200% increase. Tom suggested if I was concerned, I could offer to give 1/2 of it back. UHH, no.

And YES Don, I, too dislike driving on I-70. In fact, I make every effort to avoid I-70 at any cost. We have a work trip in SW MO coming up in 9 days and I'm hoping the bus driver doesn't use I-70

Hey we used to call that "windshield time"...

Congrats on the promotion and big raise. Nice to see a hard worker get rewarded for their efforts - not always the case anymore... 8)

Part of that windfall will have to go into upgrading my home office. I needed that anyway but definitely a requirement now. I think I can manage for the short term by simply dumping one of the older almost worn out rocking chairs and adding some temporary shelves and repainted 3 tier filing cabinets. Longer term will include a second desktop and monitor plus charging stations for the mobile devices and a foldaway tabletop size work area for those 3' x 3' maps I use.

Don, I-70 was a killer this winter. Several terrible wrecks. Many deaths reported at Odessa Exit. I avoid I-70 at all costs.

I'm headed out for my first "official" supervisor work today. Meeting some of my folks for lunch and having some tutorial from the previous super.
The job does have it's share of "windshield time"(even more than the regular field staff) but it's time and mileage so as long as I make conservative vehicle choices, I'm OK with being on the road(country roads, not city BTW)
