On the news tonight was a listing of words and phrases that sort of grate on folk's nerves and have fallen into disfavor. One was "No offense, but................" and "Whatever."

A couple that I especially dislike:

"Went missing...." Went implies voluntary leaving. More nearly correct would be "......he was listed as missing."

"Conceal carry" Conceal being a verb, the correct statement is "...to carry concealed."

There. I said it.

At the end of the day .....

As of late .....

Athleticism .....

I absolutely hate the "alt-". And there's about 10,000 other forms of verbal, visual, tactile, and electronic "communication" that I could do without.

"Awesome!" I find it amusing when people respond with "awesome", to the most mundane things. I had someone call me to fill out some medical forms over the phone. Can you spell your last name? Awesome. Can you tell me your birthdate? Awesome! I kept thinking that they were easily impressed.

Impact as a verb. IT'S A NOUN!

It is both. This revelation will likely impact you next time you're near a dictionary.

"old school" - usually spoken by a punk.
"literally" When you actually mean 'figuratively'.
"no-brainer" - sooner or later, you will use this term in front of a parent who has lost a child to encephalitis.
"kumbaya moment" - instead, just ask someone to shoot you first.
Starting any answer with "So..." -see above. Someone near you is flicking the safety off.

And every multi-language label or direction: Just speak English for Success!

Customer called me on something last year...

about the 5th time I used the phrase, " Well, to be honest....."

she pointed out that this implied everything else I was saying wasn't true...........

Totally, especially when it's pronounced "tootally". :x
A guy I once worked with was in a rock band. I wrote a very silly song for him. He read it and said, "Dude, you are an arthur!" :?

I dislike -gate being added to any scandal. Someday I expect to hear gategate about some government contractor scamming the feds for chain link passage devices.

Graygun posted 'where are you at', and I can still remember, some 65 years later, Sister Julia beating into our thick skulls, that you are after the 'at'. Still today, I find that term disturbing.

Thanks

Mike
