I'm the famous Luddite , but even for me between debit/ credit cards and direct transfer , I only actually Mail something a handful of times a year , so $0.05 isn't a big deal . If I don't loose it , my recent 20 pack of Forever stamps still has 18 left .
The meaning of LUDDITE is one of a group of early 19th century English workmen destroying laborsaving machinery as a protest; broadly : one who is opposed to especially technological change.

I have successfully opted out of shipping/mailing using the USPS. I occasionally order things that come that way but I often go days without a visit from my mailman.
I wish I could opt out of the junk mail they seem happy to pass along. Otherwise, we could go weeks without anything important coming through the USPS
I too will just wait until Christmas to buy stamps when it's about the only time of the year I mail anything.

I really despise the USPS, I cant tell you how many times I have used their priority mail which is supposed to take three to five days but ends up taking two weeks. Or even better, I buy a lot of bullets for reloading from a gentleman in Arizona and he always ships priority mail but on three different occasions they have lost them never to be seen again. If I mail anything bigger than an envelop or something worth some money it goes UPS.
On the bullets, they probably dropped the box, it burst open due to the weight, and was easier for them to sweep them into the trash and claim they were lost than to try repackaging. Days of pride in your job have long left us.
I recently purchased something from our Classifieds here. Seller mailed it Priority on Tuesday and it was in my mailbox on Friday. This is typical of the USPS for me. 
It might be the Arizona USPS. Yesterday I received a Father's Day Card from my mom. She mailed it June 15. They live just South of Phoenix.
This isn't the first time a letter or package from them or to them has taken longer than normal. The last time I mailed them a priority package, according to the tracking; it went from here to Phoenix, then on to San Diego, and then back to Phoenix before being sent down to their town.

After the first time they lost them that is exactly what he figured also so he started using the re-enforced packing tape, still lost two after that. I believe it is just what you said, they just dont give a damn. He insures all that he mails but it takes about four months for them to reimburse him.
USPS has misplace my mails containing important letter and even checks, Never to be found while on the priority mail service. I have waited weeks for mail and that never came through and now they want more money for doing a crappy job.
I hear constant complaints about USPS service, lost/late mail and consider myself fortunate. We, the wife and I, don't have any debit cards, atm cards. We pay our bills with checks or credit cards (payed off each month). We use the mail nearly daily with zero complaints.
You must have them figured out, for every 2-3 usps mail i receive or send out... Something wrong happens to the next one

Since then I have gone to using online money transfers to pay my credit card bills,
my utilities, Fire protection district, and almost everything else. I guess my supply
of "forever" stamps will last longer than I will.
When they first came out with the forever stamps I bought a BUNCH of them (at
thirty some cents each) that lasted til last Summer.
Sometimes you get lucky and make the right decision.
Since then I have gone to using online money transfers to pay my credit card bills,

Oh my! How do you mail Christmas Cards?
I can attach most of the above comments to ANY delivery service in the USA. Especially so after the past 3 years of 'Dempanic' get everything dropped at my doorstep demands.
My current employing agency has an issue with UPS that is monumental in our region. We're issued a 'block' of tracking numbers and it seems some of those numbers are showing up as 'invalid' meaning the packages are in absolute limbo. No one knows where they are, tracking fails, all we have is our employee shipping logs noting date and where shipped. Literally hundreds of pieces of irreplaceable documents are missing and these aren't small packages.
Like many/most other businesses, USPS is grabbing any warm body that they can get and the results aren't going to be good. FWIW, I'm a third generation career USPS retiree. My family was in continuous service from 1917 to 2009.

Every year my wife and I and our two dogs get a funny picture taken and we download it on the computer and email it along with a seasons greetings to a bunch of people.
We get similar ones in return.
Not to turn this into a generational thing, but seems like very few people in my generation send out Christmas cards
Agreed, I’m from late 1969, and find it odd people still pay bills by USPS. In fact I really didn’t know it’s possible to pay say a phone bill by check…with a stamp.
But the Christmas cards….I’m not sure if it’s generational or not. I don’t think I agree with that. My wife is from 1975, she loves to send And receive Christmas Cards.
We send out about 75 cards each year. And since we aren’t on FB (which is generational) it’s our way of staying in touch.
