Major George Schofield, of revolver fame, was a brother to Gen. John Schofield, for whom Schofield Barracks in Hawaii is named. Schofield Barracks as near Utopia for Army duty stations. Those barracks were the setting for Burt Landcaster et al, in the nmovie :From Here To Eternity."

Interesting to know.
For me as an Army brat, Utopia was living at Fort Brooke which was located within the 16th Century walls of El Morro fortress in old San Juan, Puerto Rico 1950-54.
(before tourists overran the place)

Honestly, all of my duty stations were pretty utopian. Rack in its own way.

Imagine an 18 yo who likes outdoor stuff in the high desert of California. Or a 19 yo single guy in Thailand. Married and living in Europe in a country with a great exchange rate. Finishing up in Florida, a fishing and boating paradise.

I even managed some great TDY’s. Germany, Britain, Italy.

Whose Army were you in?

I was stationed at Schofield from '93-'96... Utopia? I would argue against that... Definitely was a nice place to visit 3 years ago... having been back recently, it is not so nice anymore (the surrounds, I did not try to get on base).

It was interesting seeing the bullet holes from Dec. 7th though...

By Utopia, I meant that the area was what many soldiers, and sailors, looked for when off duty. The night spots in Hawaii were deemed ideal places to visit evenings.

Dad was station in Hawaii, great duty he loved it, until December 7. He sàid they were doing drills one day before before the attack and a very pretty woman walked by. So guy in the drill formation said eyes right. The DI was not happy he said they matched in a square for about 4 hours. Mony guys passed out.
