Debating Getting P95

I'm new to the forum but not too new to Ruger. I have a 10/22 for several years and love it. I also collect old mill surplus firearms. I have a few Mosins, Mausers, TT33 etc...

Lately I have been wanting to more modern pistol that can be used for plinking and self defense. I also plan on taking a couple of home / personal defense classes at my local range. I'm trying to keep my initial expense below $350. But because this will be a home defense weapon I would like eventually make a couple of upgrades.

My research brings me to the P95. I like that is is DA / SA and it has a accessory rail.

Are there a set of good night sights available? If yes, is this something I can do my self? How much should I expect to pay?

Does anyone have any recommendations about a light or laser or combo? I have heard the P95 does not have a full size rail.

LPA and I think Meprolight make night sights for the P95. Williams makes fiber optic Firesights for the P95 which work quite well. I love my P95, its great.
 
I'd get one if you're looking for a cheap (inexpensive), brand new 9MM. Shop carefully though ... you should easily be able to get one for right around $300 OTD.

If you're new to guns, and not familiar with the gun market, it would be real easy to pay WAY more than you need to for a P95. As an example, CDNN had BRAND NEW P95's for $259 in blue and $279 in stainless, with $20 shipping a while ago, I thing they're gone now, but they're still available very near that price.

They regularly go brand new here on the forum for $300 shipped.

Get the gun and a bunch of ammo first, and take your classes. Worry about the night sights and techno gadgets until after you're well used to the gun .... you'll probably decide you don't want any of that crap. I own a whole bunch of handguns (and I mean A LOT), and I don't have night sights on a single one, or a laser, or a flashlight. All lasers and flashlights will do in a home defense situation is get you shot if you don't know what you're doing.

I know it's exciting to think about hanging all kinds of junk on a gun when you first get it, but believe me .... most of that garbage ends up in a drawer gathering dust. If you can't defend yourself successfully IN YOUR OWN HOUSE without a laser or flashlight on your gun .... just call the police. Unless you're trained in clearing a house without getting killed, you're better off hunkering down, being quiet, and waiting for the perp to come to you, that way YOU'RE the one with the advantage. OR, announce that you have a gun in the hope that the perp will just leave on his own, which is BY FAR the best thing to have happen.

The only exception to this is when the perp is BETWEEN you and a loved one .... and even then .... you better be trained on clearing a house properly in the dark, or you're liable to get yourself killed walking around with a light on your gun and YOU BEHIND IT. A light makes kind of an easy target, and so does a little red dot.

Just some things to think about ! :D

I took the the plunge. I did pick on up for $300 NIB. I got the blued version. The 2 tone was 15 more but for some reason I like the blued finish.

Now I need to figure out the accessories.
 
Good job, now go shoot the crap out of it!! My BIL is a military and police combat trainer. He hates lights and lasers on pistols. He says they show the bad guy exactly where you are and spoil your night vision.
 
Congrats on your new pistol.

On the thankfully rare occasions I've needed to investigate odd things in the night, I've used an Insight Tech M3 on my own P95... they offer the same thing with a built in laser, I think it's the M6.

I don't have a light on any of my pistols although I do own one that has a rail on it. However I would think a light on the pistol should be used in conjunction with a flashlight in the off hand. I can see how it could be useful but I would not want it to be my only light.

I don't know how many magazines your P95 came with bwmartin but I would suggest the first accessories you buy to be some extra magazines & ammunition.

I just really can't fathom putting a light of any type on a pistol or a long gun for that matter.....

first is my fear that someone will use a light on a pistol like a flash light at night while looking for what made that bump in the night... it would be natural to do this and by doing so one is violating one of the cardinal rules of gun safety... keeping the weapon pointed in a safe direction....

second... I do not believe any device that you may be depending on to save your life should require batteries.

for the OP... good snag on the P95 even though I would have sprung for the extra $15 stainless one. But then you might like the color purple well enough to be more than happy in the future. :)
 
Training, and equipment selection can overcome many, many things.... in my experience, of course.

I've got a P-95 and two SR9cs (one is the wifeys). You'll love the P-95...it's a little big for concealed carry during the summer, but it's very reliable, and will eat anything you feed it (so do my SR9cs). Can't go wrong w/ the P-95 IMHO.
 
Good grab on the P-95. I have a P-95dc (blued), and it is my favorite CCW gun.
As far as the light and sights, unless you are starting your own SWAT unit, I'd think twice about going all mall ninja on it.

I carry a P95DC in a Crossbreed Super Tuck. The only thing added was MePro night sights.

The P95 is as easy to carry as a G19 Glock is.
